Celtics C Kevin Garnett (abdominal) has already been ruled out of Wednesday's game per coach Doc Rivers.
suns tonight
This is going to happen. In Steve Kerr's biggest decision to pull a trigger since that 1997 Finals 3-pointer, he will trade Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks for Shaquiiiiiiiiiiiiiile O'Neal, barring some medical disclosure that would cause the Suns to call it off after examining O'Neal today in Phoenix. All parties attached to this deal believe so.
The Suns have already canceled their morning shootaround for today. That's another sign. And, really, could Phoenix call off this deal and ask Marion to go out and bust his butt shuffling between covering Chris Paul and David West?
It's an odd coupling, pairing up a past-his-prime behemoth with health issues with Mike D'Antoni's rapid-fire offensive style. But people tend to not realize that Phoenix almost never has a five-man fastbreak. The Suns look for such quick shots that no more than two or three need to push it. Like Kurt Thomas, O'Neal can be the rebounder or inbounder who starts the break.
That leaves Phoenix in a quandary for what was going to be a big buzz game with the Hornets tonight. Assuming Marion and Banks are gone and Shaq isn't ready, the Suns might have to start Nash, Bell, Hill, Diaw and Stoudemire and go with a seven-man rotation featuring Skinner and Barbosa or go deeper with Eric Piatkowski, Sean Marks, D.J. Strawberry or Alando Tucker.
Will this work? Who knows? But it'll be interesting and better than Kazaam. Two weeks 'til the first Shaq & Suns vs. Kobe & L
