Recent Survivor Freightdog (winner of 20 in a row) took some time to answer a few questions for us. Great stuff - Enjoy everyone!
What were your expectations when you initially started participating in Survivor? Did you ever see yourself making it this far?
I started out in the contest just to see how I could do. Obviously the money was very attractive, but I never really imagined I could get that high. It was around the 10th or 11th pick when I started thinking, "hey, I could actually do this!" I was feeling good about my picks and that is a huge help.
What was your strategy for making your picks? You seemed to make your selections very carefully towards the end, how much research were you putting towards making your final choices?
In the beginning I don't think I was "handicapping" as hard as I was toward the end. Once I started getting up to the 7th or 8th pick I started to take more in-depth looks at the games. I have a thing for college basketball, so when the season ended I was left with some sports that I wasn't as good at handicapping. Over/Unders in the NBA and MLB games seemed to be my biggest strengths after college bball, so I tried to stick to that. I think all those reasons mentioned above caused me to take a little more time making my selections towards the end.
Some people refuse to watch a game when they have a lot riding on it due to the added stress. Towards the end of your streak were you watching all the games you made selections for?
Yes, if it was on TV I was watching it. If it wasn't on TV I had "gamecast" or "gameday" up on my computer following the action. I've never been one to bet something big and purposely not watch it to avoid the stress. For some reason I just need to see whats going on, maybe so I can complain about it later if I lose!
We find ourselves obliged to ask the million dollar question that repeatedly finds it way in to our forums. Did you at all ?hedge' your Wagerline selection or just try to go big?
I did make out with money on the 21st pick. Its hard to do for some of us, because you feel like your "jinxing" yourself by making a "hedge" bet. But if you really sit down and think about it, it is the smart thing to do. Especially if you want to come out with some amount of money.
What was your overall experience like throughout this journey? Do you have any tips or final thoughts for your fellow Wagerline contest participants?
This was an amazing experience! If I don't make it as a "professional handicapper", ha, I always have a story to tell the grandkids. A couple of tips for my fellow Wagerline contestants would be to be patient, and to try not to over-think your picks. If you look at the guys/gals that made it to 20 and 21, they took around 2 months to get there. (except Tuppy, that guy is a machine!) I know for a fact that I over-thought some picks at the end and possibly let the $100K slip by. Its really hard not to do, especially at the end, but you have to try and think of it as your first pick. Good luck to everyone and hope to see you all on the leaderboard in the near future.

Congrats Freightdog on your great run. For someone whose sport finished midway through contest you did quite well and should be very proud of the status you reached

jinxed is an UNDERstatement. I think I'm laying off the ov/un picks for a long time now. What more could I ask for, 4-2 top 9 with Hoffman on the mound to close it out. I give up.
