I just found out I can do that very easily with my directv receiver via usb. It becomes the default drive, and automatically formats it when you connect it. Makes the original drive inaccesssble though, so make sure you are finished with all prior recordings.

Yep. That is exactly how it works. I just spent about $150.00 on my external hard drive. It connects via USB and formatted to fat32. I can't wait to test it out when it arrives.
