Best laptop for the buck

Question

Friend of mine who uses it only to surf the web and compose small docs.Going to throw the $600 rebate at a new one, wants an opinion on the best made one for that price.He's thinking Dell, I thought Dell was junk and proprietary, but maybe I am wrong.Dunno.

Anyway, he knows enough to avoid Vista like the plague.

Any suggestions appreciated.

If he want&#x27;s a Dell that&#x27;s better qualtiy.  Tell him to get something from thier XPS series. &#xD;&#xA; &#xD;&#xA;You can get XP from Dell still but I&#x27;m not sure if the XPS has this option.

I would go with Gateway. The 1st computer I ever bought, running Windows 98, I can still get tech support for. Oh, and people who speak English.&#xD;&#xA; &#xD;&#xA;A computer is a computer (basic one anyway) and you&#x27;ll pay about the same with every manufacturer. Where they screw you is with tech support, and short lived warranties.&#xD;&#xA; &#xD;&#xA;I&#x27;ve had 4 HP laptops (brand new for work), a docking station, and 3 wireless printers and have had major issues with each of them. You couldn&#x27;t give me an HP for free. And their tech support is horrible (from India, just like Dell). No comment on Dell as I&#x27;ve never owned one.
