Anyone else hear about this?

Supposedly today is the biggest day for online purchases, well that is news to me.

If anyone runs across a screaming deal online for a laptop let me know.

Past few years there has been metion of this.  I didn't see anything that was so great today.

Here is the quandry..

You have educated me Lippsman and now I am much more picky than I used to be.

In past purchases I looked for cost and basic features..now I look for non shared memory, better components and price.

I went to DELL the other day, they had Vostros on sale so I checked them out..base price was 599 (400 off) but by the time I upgraded the processor, memory and a few other things, then tried to get ANY sort of reasonable warranty (they charge for everything..base warranty is garbage..3 separate warranty categories to upgrade to) by the time you had any kind of warranty talking to someone in the US etc you have doubled that initial price.

DELL has ground down their basic package so badly that in order to get a reasonable product you have to pay up for everything.

Oh and does DELL even NOT have a system without shared memory???

Yes they do have a system without shared memory.  It's really the system you should be looking at because of all the upgrades you want

It's the XPS series

Yeah but those are getting near and higher than the price for other names that are better..

If I am going to pay 1500 or more I sure dont want a DELL do I?

Sorry about the stock..hit that 30 area and got smashed..

Oh I got out when the options expired.  I'm huge into INAP now....I bought the stock at $9.60.  I snapped up 5K shares yesterday, I've been watching it.  I've already made some nice scratch on it already.  I let it bottom out and went crazy with again yesterday.  Looking for a 2 point move and then I'm out again.

So what about the DELL issue, I went to their site and the basic run of the mill XPS series is 1100 plus without spending up to get a better processor or warranty.

The Lifebook we got for the wife was 1500 bucks if I recall..

The XPS computers use much better componets than the other computers.  That's the main reason for the price on them.  You just really need to decide if you are going to go "bargin basement" or get one of the better units.
 
If you get one of the higher line computers you might as well start there.  The base price on those will be cheaper than maxing out the lower end laptops.

I looked at that exact one last night. And I love the 100 gift card hook..how funny.

What makes the components better specifically?

I see a 1.5G pentium, 1 GB memory (the speed is 667 which is better than average) HD is average, graphics card is lower range for NVidia, one year service talking to someone from India..haha

I dont mind spending 1500 on a computer, but with DELL you have to upgrade nearly everything.

Maybe they run some XPS deals down the road.

So if you were buying, would it be an XPS?

If it was from Dell and you wanted something more than a run of the mill wordprocessing/internet computer it would be the XPS.
 
The components have much better capcitors and resistors, plus the PCB boards are usually 7 layers as opposed to 4 or 5 layers in the other cheper stuff.  Much better paths for that current.
 
They never put the XPS stuff on sale.  Never........
 
As odd as it may seem, thier margins are lower for that stuff, most of the time than the chepie stuff. Where they make the money on the XPS stuff is when you start tricking it out.  Get them right off the shelf and you are ok.

My AC adaptor is going out and I know it..so my time is short on looking for somthing.

The Lifebook we got for the wife was nice, heavy but nice..but the place that carrys it locally the price is quite high.

I was looking at a few at Best Buy today..they had an Acer and Toshiba for about 900 each which had the better GForce card, big HDs and 2GB memory..the problem was the processor was only 1.5, then they had a Sony for 1500 which had the 2G processor and Blue Ray, the NVidia GT graphics, bigger HD etc but it was 1500 bucks.

I wonder if I should comprimise on the processor speed since I am not running games on it..

I should have acted sooner rather than needing somthing on the quick and being stuck so to speak..

If you have a good deal of memory then it's not as big of a deal.  But remember, if you buy off the shelf for the big box store you will be stuck with Vista.

Yeah I have consigned myself to that fact..unfortunately.

Which do you think has most price/value

Acer 999- 2gb memory, 250G hd, 1.5 duo2, 8400M GForce card, 17inch monitor

Toshiba 899- 2 gb memory, 200gb hd, 1.5 duo2, intel graphics, 15.4 inch monitor

Sony 1500- 2gb memory, 2.0 duo2,  320 gb memory, blue ray, wireless N, Nvidia 8400 GT, HDMI connector, 17inch XBrite screen

Only comment after viewing them all is Sony looks CLUNKY.

Sony loaded but for 500 plus more I am not sure it is worth it....

I like Sony's stuff, it's good quality but the price factor is a turn off.  Oh yeah......so is all the pure crap they put on it.  I have people come in to have us wipe almost everything off it.
 
I would say the Toshiba.  I mean really, will you miss having a 250 gb hard drive instead of just having a 200gb.  I don't think so.
 
Now if it's just going to be used as a desktop instead of a laptop.  Then by all means get the Acer, that's a nice screen.  But if you are going to carry this sucker around at all, don't get the 17inch one.  It gets real old, real fast.

Yeah it is a LAP top for sure..usually I park it and play games with the kiddo or watch the market..or box a few kiddos on Covers..

haha

Or if I could string this out longer (the AC issue) would you build and hope it works out online? (works out meaning that I can string this computer along well enough?)

Oh and this is the new motherboard we worked through last time and it is doing the same thing as the other one did..plug in an AC adaptor and it either doesnt show any connection for charging the battery or it says the type of AC isnt recognized by the system and it wont charge the battery.

All the crap on these last two dell Inspirons makes me wary of another DELL..plus I am serious, they dont give anything with a base system..its almost embarrasing..

I can't believe the motherboard didn't fix that.  The only thing left is your AC adaptor.
 
Hey, Dell has what they call gold support now.  You get someone statside.
 
And it's only $49 dollars.

Yeah.

Then you have to get upgraded PHONE support on top of tech support and on top of that if you want FAST answering to phones for the product you have to PAY for that.

Its a total joke..

Yeah the AC adaptor probably sucks on this motherboard too..

haha

Hey, I have a buy order for Dell at $25.54 on Monday.  After it has been getting hammered all November I see it rebounding a point or two, then I'm outta there.
