About 4 years ago I bought my daughter an Enpower laptop & it looks as though the HD is failing or has failed. It started clattering a while ago, the mouse would freeze at times, & now the unit won't boot up. It tries for about 5 mins. & then says it can't because of a corrupted or missing file (Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe) Anyhow, the hd is a Toshiba 20G. What determines what would be a compatible replacement, preferably bigger (like a 60-100 gig)? Does it have to be another Toshiba?

You should be able to replace it with any 2.5" laptop hard drive, but check first to make sure they put some strange proprietary drive in that thing. What's the model of the laptop? Look it up on their website and see the specs.

Put in the restore and recover disk and hit a key to boot from the cd rom. Then when it finishes loading you hit R for repair.
Then click whatever windows installation you are trying to repair, it should be 1.
Then at the prompt, type in chkdsk /p
It will do some repairing, the longer it takes the worse off your filesystem is. When it's finished take the cd out and reboot then pray.
Now it could just be a bad sectoron the hard drive afterall. At least this way you will know for sure.

Strange as it may sound, I'm not sure of the model #. It says CY27 on the bottom but a google search leads to the battery in most cases. Enpowers' web site doesn't list anything close to that & they have no archives.

We don't have a R&R disk............don't think it came with one. It has the user manual disk & a driver disk. Fortunately, there's nothing vital to be lost if we don't recover this (other than the OS & some programs). My daughter was smart enough to attach docs & email herself all of her school docs when this thing started acting up.
Although this thing is seeming a bit obsolete, it does have a decent processor (P-4M,2.0) & XP Home. It was around $1100 back in 2003.........not a ton of dough but enough that I'd like to see her get another year out of it before replacing it.
BTW...........will anybodies R&R disk work? I'm sure I could find one from someone if I ask around.

As long as it's just a Windows XP disk it will work with the correct number. Unless it's a corporate install, then it won't need one. But I think you will be hard pressed to find a R&R for that brand of laptop. The disk from other makers most likely won't work.

I've ordered a West.Dig. 80g hd (5400rpm vs the 20g/4200 that was in it) & some more RAM from Newegg (around $100 all tolled). Hopefully this will solve the problem. Should be fun as I've never formatted a new hd before.

No, it wasn't tough at all. Just a few options to consider but all in all it was relatively painless. Took about 3 hours to load the OS & other programs (had to call MS to register).
The biggest problem I had was figuring out why the new HD didn't have the same connectors as the old one. The original was an IDE so that's what I ordered to replace it with. This laptop has a unique connector for the hd...............there's a plastic cover, with metal contacts in it, that slides over the 40 pins. With it on the hd, you can't even tell there are connector pins there. It took a while to figure out that the piece could be removed, placed over the pins on the new drive, then inserted into the laptop............the connector very much resembles a laptop battery connector. It drove me nuts for a bit as I couldn't find anything online about it.
