NP G8,
Most of the time it's spyware that tries to change your home page or writes code to your registry. Get a good spyware program. Persoanlly I reccomend AVG Spyware 7.5. I believe it's still free for 30 days then it's $39.95 for two years. Or you can still use it after it exprires, you just have to update the definations yourself and you don't have real time protection anymore. If you need virus protection then go ahead and get thier virus/spyware package.

No, Windows Defender isn't the best choice out there. Also, you will need service pack 2. You should install this ASAP. There are many security fixes that could of kept your TCP/IP stack un-corrupted in the first place
Go ahead and do it tonight. Then run all of the high priority service updates

I can't man. There's something not allowing me to do it. I had a thread about it a while back, I'll bump it.

Do you have a legal version of Windows? Hologram CD?

Even though there is a sticker on the bottom doesn't mean it's a legal version. The laptop could of been formatted for some reason and the leagal install cd may of not been used to re-install.
Go here and click on the validate Windows button and test your software.

I would say that is exactly what it is.

My first guess then would be registry corruption. Do you or anyone you know have a copy of Norton Systemworks?

Try downlading service Pk 2 and installing it offline. Go to Microsoft's website and search service pk 2. It will ba about a 266 meg file I believe.
If that doesn't work you can do a repair install.
Personally I would just back up your important data and do a restore and recover. Make sure when you do this you delete the partition. You want to make sure every bit of the OS is gone before you re-install. Also do a regular format instead of a quick format.

That's probably what I'll have to do. I've tried a million times to download the Service pack 2 and it never works. I don't really have any important data, that computer is used to watch games online, go to covers, and go to matchbook. I don't need anything special on it, just that it freaking works
Sounds like an erase and start over is best bet. Thanks man.
