no this is an awful deal.
small screen, needs more ram and only an 80gb hard drive.
 
you can find better deals right off the circuit city floor.

You see the processor? I could get a NEW monster HD if I wanted it.

599 for a 1.6 duo core with XP seems pretty decent to me..

Processor is the only good thing about it.  14 inch screen is small.
you will have to upgrade ram to 2gb at some point. and if you buy a new hard drive, you could have gotton all these same things and more for 700-900 bucks.
also dont be afraid to look at the amd chips, they are just as good and you get more bang for your buck with them.
I talked to an hp tech guy and he said he uses the amd chip.

also with the amd laptops you actually get some pretty good video cards with them, instead of just accelarator cards which intel puts with their laptops.

am actually probably gonna go buy this one tomorrow at circuit city.  its pretty loaded with everything you would need in a laptop and for only 100 bucks more then the one you posted.

 I just looked at your deal again.  what are you gonna do with a 4 cell battery?  you will be recharging that thing all day long.  6 cell is the least you should have for a battery.

I saw that.

Two problems, I have ZERO confidence in HP and I dont know enough about the AMD chip to buy a computer with that processor.

Not really, at least not in the mobile devices.  Not a huge fan of the desktops either.  But can stomache them a bit more.

I have never owned an AMD computer, but if people knew your knowledge base, then they would feel as I do about your opinions.

 intel might have the market cornered but that doesnt mean amd is putting out a bad chip, in fact the amd chip beats intels chip on alot of tests.  I dont know what your knowledge base is, but you really should look alittle closer at the amd chips, especially in a notebook where you can get a bigger bang for your buck.
 
Intel is doing what vhs tapes did to beta tapes.  Even thou beta was a much better product, they lost out because vhs cornered the market.

Lippsman, almost forgot.  what are your reasons for not liking amd chips, like the amd turion 64 x 2 chip?

In single application test the AMD will outperform the Intel in certain test.  But in multiple applicatons I much prefer the Intel CPU's. Multiple application is real world.
 
For example, when multiple applications are running,   the Intel Pentium 840 Extreme Edition is superior to the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+

Who runs single applications nowadays?

Now if you just use a home computer for crusing the internet and some word processing, go ahead and save few bucks and get the AMD.  But if you are running high powered games, runnings apps such as CAD and Photoshop then stick with an Intel.
 
AMD did get a jumpstart on Intel with the 64bit chips.  Intel way underestimated the use of these for home use.  Which BTW for most people using a 64 bit CPU for home is a waste.  But I digress.
 
Bottom line is that if AMD didn't have that partership with IBM they would of been sunk by now. They do power the Playstation 3's. IBM couldn't make with thier chips, which BTW once again.......I did use them in the shop some back when they were in production. 
 
If you build computers, use real good parts.  Don't cheap out.  Get a rock solid motherboard and power supply. That will help out a great deal no matter which CPU you put it.
 
Just for disclosure we are an Intel authorized dealer. Even though we do sell AMD's and will build AMD boxes. Also the first computer I built was an Intel 8088. A whopping 4.77 MHz of computing power.  
 
Something you will love, right beside me is an Altair computer that runs a 8080 CPU that runs at 2 MHz.  It still works.

 Thanks for the good info.  Could you tell me if this laptop is worth buying, seems like it has good parts and dont need it to do anything extreme.
 
 
You want to hear something funny, i still have my first computer its a packard bell with the 8088 lollllllllllllll. I paid 1500 bucks for the darn thing at rosa's when they came out.  Had 2  5 1/4 floppy disks and no hard drive.  Is this antique worth anything?

cd329,  you're welcome.  I don't see anything the matter with that laptop, it's a god deal.   The only thing I don't like is that it has Vista, but that's another thread alltogether.

Lippsman, thanks.  I agree vista sucks and wish microsoft wasnt gonna stop servicing xp.

One other question, i heard some laptops get very hot, is it the battery that causes the computer to get hot or is it the chip that causes it?

It's the chip mainly, that's what is holding CPU speeds down in laptops.  Just not enough room and venting of air for faster CPU's. The batteries do get a bit hot, but not enough to really feel anything.  I've seen laptops when the cooling fan went out, where the keyboard was actually melted in places.
