Now when you say goes to a blank screen, do you mean that the operating system loads again. Such as you can see the Windows XP logo come up. If this is so I would say your power supply is g etting ready to go belly up on you. Take a look at one of my DOTD post. There is a good deal on a power supply.

When I say it re-starts, it's as if I just turned my PC on, so it runs the checks (IDE) and whatever else...then I have to put my PW in to log-in

I think you're right about it being the power supply. I have run scan disk/defrag numerous times with no luck. What goes in to removing the old and installing the new power supply? Do you think if I were to go to COMPUSA or a PC store and purchase a power supply, they could just switch them up real quick, or is it more complicated than it seems?
Thanks so much for the help

The motherboard got zapped, but the power supply was O.K. That is a bit strange.
But glad you got it fixed.

We replace about 5 power supplies a week in the shop. Between people not having thier computer on a UPS. Plus we are at the beach and we get those 15 minute lighting storms all of the time and the cheap Chinese power supplies they are putting in these sub $500 computers there are quite a few power supplies that go belly up.
We actually have a $15 dollar cheapie power supply and a high end $150 Antec power supply cracked open so we can show people the difference.
But $100 is a good bit high to replace the motherboard. Although you won't just pop a few screws out in 15 minutes and replace the motherboard on one of these HP's/Compaq's or the slimline desktops. It takes you 15 minutes to even crack the damn case open and get all the crap out of the way to even get to the motherboard.
