Anyone see the story on the news about this site?

Company donates laptop computers to developing nation children who learn how to use the laptop and the kids get to take the computer home and share with their parents.

Well on Nov 12th they are offering a Get 1 Give 1 program where for 399 you can buy a laptop for a child and a child of yours..one goes for the organization and one is shipped to you.

I am considering it but my kiddo is a computer snob and I am not sure she would accept this computer versus my old POS Dell Inspiron..haha

I was impressed with the cause and the good it does for kids though...

Yes, this the $100 laptop that is now $188.  I thought that pricepoint was quite a bit low.  I'm getting one just so I can check it out.

I watched the 60 minutes piece (I think it was 60 min...or Dateline) and the thing has satellite internet, anywhere in the world..very durable and seems to do the basic stuff..not sure how well it would work with high graphic needs or heavy processing though..

Also you hand crank it for power.  I didn't know about the satellite internet though.  That is a bit surprising, because someone has to pay for that somewhere down the road.

Well, that's close enough. They are using a very low low spec CPU in there.  Also, do you notice a certain part missing in this laptop............
 
tick, tock, tick, tock.
 
No hard drive, also there are no fans at all in here.  So no storing of programs, they will all have to run off the flash memory.
 
Looking thorugh my notes I see that they decided not use the hand crank now.  That would be a seperate unit.  Which leads me to ask about using these laptops where there is not power.  Because you know that has to be a concern with a good deal of the people using them.

So do you think this is a joke and would be somthing regular computer users would dislike?

Well in no way do I think this is a joke.  If we can get this low tech into hands of kids in 3rd world nations it's a great thing.
 
But I don't think I would be giving this to a kid in the USA.  When they can't even load a game off the shelf onto the system you will see eyes roll.

Yeah..thats what I was meaning, bad implying there by me.

I was meaning if my kid who is a computer snob would have a tough time with it..

i thought these were suppose to be 100 bucks? so what happen to the other 200 dollars?

The price did start out at $100, but that was way unrealistic.  It's now $188 with the other $12 being used for shipping and other things.
