Paging Lippsman - LCD monitor trouble

Hey Lippsman,
I bought a Gateway widescreen high def monitor (2185W) about 1 1/2 years ago, and it died on me. After doing some research I found that the problem appears to be that cheap transformers were used when manufacturing. Can you steer me to a reputable place to get this repaired, because of course Gateway isn't standing behind it. Also, any idea how much this may cost me (ballpark of course, the parts are probably about $10, I'm just not comfy taking the monitor apart and soldering them on) I'm in the Philly area, any help appreciated.

I meant to say the capacitors are bad.

I will make a few calls up your area today and see what can be done. These monitors were very poorly put together.  The trouble is that those $10 in parts will be raised to about $99 and the labor will be in the $150 range.  But I will see what I can find out

I think this might be something I can handle myself, I was in the IT field for a few years and did hardware for a large law firm, although I've never done any soldering. The worst that can happen is I totally screw up and have to buy a new monitor, and with the cost of the repair sounding like it might be the same as a new monitor I think I'm willing to give it a shot. I can buy a 21" comparable to mine for around $250 (newegg) 

I'll never buy anything from Gateway again for sure.

Do you guys both agree that LCD is better than plasma?  I'm looking to buy one, probably in the 42" range, and haven't got a clue on which to get.

Errrr....I was talking about TV's, not monitors.  My bad.
 
If you guys have any input, I'd love to hear.  If not, good luck with the monitor, 3rd.

Oh LCD is much better than plasma.  Less power used, not as much head put out.  Longer life.  Just make sure you get a good quality one if you are going to play games on it.  It will keep the ghosting down

Nope, no games....just TV viewing.
 
Have any thoughts on a brand?  And what's a fair cost?  I'm thinking somewhere around $1,000 or so, I'm guessing.

I have a Samsung and I love it.
 
Go to the store and look at them first, the prices are really starting to come down. Drop me an email if you have questions, I've already been down the research path.
 
Lippsman, I'll let you know how the repair attempt goes, probably won't get to it for a week or so.

Thanks 3rd, I might get in touch with you in the next week or so. I've wanted a new television for the longest time, but for whatever reason, have been lazy about doing the research.

I say Samsung all the way, you pay extra for it, but it's more than worth it.  Everyone one of my TV's and monitors are Samsung

I just got the Panasonic 37" LZ800 and the picture looks great. Samsung makes a quality product also.
