ATP-ranked #9 Juan Martin Del Potro JUST won the Bronze Medal in the Olympics as he beat #2 in the world Novak Djokovic in a straight set 7-5, 6-4 win.  And don't forget, he almost beat #1 in the world Roger Federer in the previous match when he took Fed to the final set and finally lost 17games to Fed's 19 games in a marathon match.

ATP-ranked #38 Jeremy Chardy is LUCKY to even be here as he was the Lucky Loser who didn't even QUALIFY to play in the main draw until John Isner dropped out.

Delpo has a HUGE serve and is playing great.  Chardy will not be able to handle Delpo.  Absolutely not.  Sure, Chardy beat Andy Murray, the GOLD medalist of the London Olympics,...but I really don't want to get into what I think about that crying kid and how IMO think the gold was "given" to him on his home court in front of his home crowd for all the ratings and love that Murray will NEVER earn on his own.  Please Murray, cry for me....please Murray, throw your racket a few times as you look like a big fucking kid who cries "Injury" everytime he plays badly.  Sorry...I hate that kid.  Worst player to watch on the tennis courts IMHO.

Let me compare some things:

Delpo is 45-12 on the year with TWP ATP tournament titles while Chardy is barely hovering over .500 with a 17-15 w/l record this year.  Chardy had to try and Play his way into this 1000 tourney and failed....but Lucky Him, Isner gave him the opportunity to "play with the house's money."

Delpo is 21-7 on the hard courts compared to Chardy's 3-5 on hard.  When you dig deeper, Chardy is 42-53 ALL-TIME on hard and is a better player on Clay where he is 12-8 this year and 51-40 on Clay.

When you get into the H2H stats on the year, Delpo hit 384 aces to 108 double-faults where he averages over 3 times more aces than DFs.  Chardy has LESS aces and MORE double faults than Delpo on the year.

Delps hits 65% of his 1st serves while Chardy hits only 55% and Delpo wins 87% of his service games compared to Chardy's 79%.

Delpo is also a better returner than Chardy.

Just to give you a better understanding of who Jeremy Chardy is...he not only has to try and play his way in and try to qualify to get into the main draw of a tourney like this, Chardy also has to SAND-BAG down to the ATP CHALLENGER TOUR to make some extra cash.  Chardy is 10-2 in at the Challenger Level this year.

I am tempted by the above; will probably parlay with someone like Li Na 

Chardy recently beat Roddick, Istomin and Murray. It cannot be a coincidence that he is doing this well, he is streaking. Do I really want to mess with a streaking player? I am not so sure.

Everest....very understandable on "guarantees", "locks", "GOYs" and such...just fun lighting fires and getting rises out pf people.

But to add to my argument...I didn't dig into the EXACT results of these players in what Im going to explain next, but by my ATP-ranking calculations...there was no reason for del Potro to try and win vs Troicki....EXCEPT FOR THE REASON THAT HE THINKS HE CAN WIN IT ALL.

Here's why:

Here are the ATP-ranks #7, #8, & #9 coming into this event in Cincy & their ato total points:

#7: Berdych 4,425
#8: Tipsarevic 3,320
#9: del Potro 3,305

Only #7 Berdych got out of the 2nd round (round of 32). He made it to the semi-finals grabbing 360 points.

Berdych got knocked out in round 3 (round of 16) only grabbing 90 points this year.

From last year's results of 360 to only 90 points means he is losing 270 pts come Monday...the last rankings for them b4 the U.S. Open. That would put Needy at 4,155 points.

Delpo on the other hand only had 45 points in 2011 losing to Fed if I remember correctly in 2011???? Delpo had already gone 1 round further than 2011 when he met Troicki yesterday so he gained 45 points more than last year. By beating Troicki he earned 180 points minus his 45 from last year for total of 135 more points added on come Monday. #8 Tipsy matches his points from last year and was only 15 points better than delpo coming into the tourney.

I don't know if I followed all that but Delpo had already secured himself to move from #9 in the world to #8 in the world. In the 128-man field of the US open, moving from #9 to #8 makes a big difference in seed placement for the us open.

He didn't need to beat troicki if you he was just "tuning up" as some of you like to say. Hmmm...Referee has some hugely tough players to get past on his side p
Of the Cincy bracket and pretty much he has an easy match with Chary to most likely meet Djokovic in the semi-finals which he just straight-set beat in London for the bronze medal.

I think Delpo thinks he has a chance of claiming an ATP 1000 TITLE here...PLUS the 1000 points to be the overall winner of the ATP 1000 tourney coupled with #7 Thomas Berdych's loss of 270 points would make him jump from #9 to #7 just before the US Open....AND they have a week off between this tourney and the Open.

Solo...in summary Delpo didn't need the Troicki win, but IMO I think he can win an ATP 1000 Title AND become #7 in the world for a better seeding of the US Open.

Everest...me personally, I am not saying it's a "tune-up" for him or anybody else...me personally, I don't think "tune-ups" are in big ATP 1000 Tournies for the most part...every player is his own boss and though many people/bettors don't look at it like I do...Tennis is Their Job and they are Head of their own Money-making independent business. If Murray wants to drop out bcuz of an "injury" during a well-rained-out tournament that was getting pushed back and crammed together in Canada so that he could get ready to defend his title in Cincy...then all the more power to him. It's his job, not mine. I cud only wish to play professional sports as a career.

The only thing I was getting at is that he had the "choice" of copping-out and losing to Troicki after already moving up a ranking/seed for the US Open...OR he REALLY thinks he has a great chance to spend 3 more days and 3 more matches of exertions at owning an ATP 1000 title and then take the free week off between Cincy and the US Open to recover. I feel "tune-ups" are not just saved for good players playing ATP 250 or maybe even ATP 500 events, but also use "tune-ups" when there ISN'T a week off b4 the MAIN EVENT.

I just feel he had the choice to not exert himself on beating Troicki for the price of possibly 3 more days and 3 more matches with a wrist that supposedly is bothering him...and the choice at what he sees as a GREAT OPPORTUNITY to claim an ATP 1000 Title and pop 1 more seed better for the US Open. No need to middle the two choices and lose to fricken Lucky Loser Jeremy Chardy who may be streaking a few rounds now, but wasn't streaking when he LOST TO #59 FABIO FOGNINI IN THE QUALIES. FOGNINI IS FRICKEN 2-4 on the year on hard courts and 21-46 career on hard.

No reason to middle between already moving up a ranking spot and making a run at an ATP 1000 Title when supposedly his wrist is injured. His wrist will be fine or he wudve taken the Troicki opportunity to get out,...he can easily beat a Lucky Loser with a slow slicing backhand,...he just beat the Djoker in straight-sets for a bronze medal,...and Fed has Fish, Raonic & his #2 countryman in his way. Mmmmm...Mmmmm...Good!

So how did Chardy's splits compare andy roddick and murray? chardy beat them both recently right. I just don't like your approach, nothing your saying has to do with the actual matchup...chardy can win easily just my opinion

I  dont like this bet at all  I would never go big on a guy that took a medical timeout his previous match But I hope you continued to post  TD.Yea that line gives me a hard on too , but I always second guess those lines now.

IMO, if his wrist hurt enough or the injury was that bad...he had the decision to retire out of a round he didn't need (according to my ATP-ranking math),...UNLESS his left wrist really wasn't that bad that ONE NIGHT'S-worth of rest, ice, and inflammatories would get it back to near-good AND NOT have the chance to FURTHER INJURE IT just TWO WEEKS before the US open.

According to my belief that Delpo Really thinks he has a really good shot at taking the the Western & Southern ATP 1000 crown...AND it is WORTH spending at LEAST ONE more game and at Most 3 more games trying to do so...along with the idea that there is apparently something wrong with his left wrist...HE MADE A DECISION when the trainer was out there to either Quit While He Could And Rest or Make a Run with a Wrist That Really Wasn't All That Bad Afterall...I bet that all Delpo had to do is finish off the round and het ice/anti-inflammatories/rest on that wrist and he'd be better for the next match.

Tennis players are probably THE LEAST LIKELY to play through an INJURY that could be further injured, this isn't the NFL. MOSTLY 2 weeks before the "Superbowl".

MASON — In September of 2009, Juan Martin del Potro was on top of the tennis world.

The 20-year-old Argentine had just hoisted the U.S. Open trophy after unseating five-time defending champ Roger Federer – breaking the Federer-Rafael Nadal-Novak Djokovic stranglehold on Grand Slams that dated back to early 2005. Del Potro would soon ascend to No. 5 in the world, and it looked like the game had a new superstar.

Nearly three years later, he’s grinding out matches on Court 3 under the noonday sun, trying rejoin the ATP Tour’s elite.

The latest step in that quest came Thursday in a 7-6 (2), 2-6, 6-1 win over 32nd-ranked Viktor Troicki of Serbia. Seeded No. 6 at the Western & Southern Open and ranked ninth in the world, del Potro will play lucky loser Jeremy Chardy in Friday’s quarterfinals.

“I’m close to beating the biggest players,” said del Potro. “That helps me to get confidence, to keep working, to get motivation, everything.”

Del Potro opened his match against Troicki with a break, but then immediately lost his serve, leading him to call for a trainer to examine his left wrist. Tendinitis in his right wrist caused him to miss most of the 2010 season.

“It was really tough to play because my mind was thinking about the experience with my other wrist,” said del Potro, who also called for a trainer Wednesday in his win over Tommy Haas.

After being broken again, del Potro got things back on serve before putting away the first set in a tiebreak.

Undeterred, Troicki broke del Potro to begin the second set, which he ended up winning 6-2.

But del Potro blew away Troicki in the third to seal the match.

“I think I played well, although without my backhand,” said del Potro. “I tried to play as much as I can with my forehand and make aces with my serve, make short points.”

A big part of Del Potro’s struggles has been Federer’s resurgence after losing to the Argentine twice in the last half of 2009. Since then, del Potro is 0-7 against Federer, with 6 of his 12 defeats in 2012 coming to the No. 1-ranked Swiss.

Last month in London, Federer overcame del Potro in the longest match in Olympic history – a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 19-17 win that took 4 hours and 26 minutes. Del Potro recovered to beat Djokovic for the bronze medal.

Del Potro also squandered a 2-sets-to-none lead to Federer at the French Open, and was bounced from last year’s W&S Open by him.

“I think I’m getting closer to them, but they’re playing much better than me at the moment,” said del Potro.

for delpo, you should consider, if he has a small injury and he feels some pain today, why should he play that hard? to make it worse? i mean, 1 week away from the major and from your writeups, i could thinnk it was the 5th major on the tour. honestly, this is cincy, main focus is on the us open. for chardy, its the opposite imo. he is on a decent run and should be loaded with confidence. not saying he will win, but there is a good chance you'll lose this bet.

You got me wrong...yes, if his hand hurts, then why bother playing hard, right?  Well he's played 2 matches now where he needed to call a trainer to look at it.  He, in my rankings calculations, DIDN'T need to beat Troicki to better his ranking, but rather would have to not just win that match, but win the Next 3 matches to move up TWO spots instead of the ONE that he already claimed BEFORE the Troicki match.

So yes,...Delpo made his decision already and why would he change it now?!?!  He didn't need the Troicki match in my estimations unless he thought he had a great opportunity to make a run to the Western & Southern Crown.

If he didn't need to win the Troicki match and his hand was Still bothering him that bad, he Would've dropped the Troicki match...why bother, right?  But instead took it to the max 3 sets for the win.

And NO, not trying to say the Western & Southern is the "5th Grand Slam".  BUT it IS an ATP 1000 event compared to a 250-pooper or just a 500.  An ATP 1000 crown is 1 short of a Grand Slam...and as I've said, there is a week off between THIS tourney and the US Open GS.
