Gulbis is 1-2 over the last 3 years at the US Open trying to defend a (-1.5 set) spread. He's also 1-2 trying to do it this year as well. Bedene has a terrible grand slam record, 1-9 but he managed his first ever grand slam win in Wimbledon this year.
It really should have came earlier in the year, Bedene reaching the final in Chennai, eased through qualifying in Australia only to draw Novak Djockovic in the first round. To be fair to Bedene, he has lost to Djockovic, Tsonga, Thiem and Kevin Anderson in the opening rounds of Grand Slams, and you'd have to feel he needs to seize this opportunity of picking up a second main draw win.
The winner of this one meets Gilles Simon or Donald Young. Bedene recorded a nice win over Simon in Winston Salem this week before losing in straight sets to Pierre Hughes Hebert, but the 3 hour battle the previous night had obviously taken it's toll. He should be fresh to battle Gulbis on Monday/Tuesday. Expect a tight one but surely some value in the Bedene moneyline @+162 also.

You can never write off Novak Djokovic, but I feel Roger Federer has his best chance of winning a final grand slam here in Flushing Meadows. He took a calculated risk skipping Montreal, but coming into Cincinnati completely fresh was probably the best decision he made all year. He swept through the tournament at ease, dismantling Murray and Djockovic in straight sets.
Obviously Djokovic turns into a monster come slam time, but there was no way he wanted to lose in Cincy to Roger, having being runner up there on numerous occasions and needing a title there to complete the Golden Masters. I feel Federer has more than enough to reach a final here, Murray a potential banana skin in the semi's, but Roger has had no problems with Andy over the past year or so. The juice is too good to pass up here. Roger to win the open

Not the best of value, but Novak should breeze past this Brazilian easily. Souza is 0-1 in the main draw here, 4-6 in qualifying and 0-6 all time in grand slam events. Souza has only played a handful of matches on hard court this year and I can't see him winning more than 6 games in this one. Djokovic has breezed through the first round the last 3 years, winniing by a -13 game margin. This included 2 wins against players who are predominantly clay courters, Lorenzi and Schwartzman. Souza is in the same category and a mauling is on the cards here.

Expect a dogfight here. Gasquet is 4-6 with the over in the first round at the US Open. This may not look attractive but given that he was a seed for most of these years and the fact the over is 2-1 in the last 3 years in the first round here, expect Kokkinakis, who's 4-0 on the over in the first round of Grand Slams to give it his all and push the frenchman hard. The two met in Cincinnati and although Gasquet pulled through in straight sets, the first did go to a tiebreak and could easily have gone the way of the Aussie. Expect at least 4 sets here.

Round 1 Thanasi Kokkinakis vs Richard Gasquet
Pick: Over 34.5 games @-120

A real toss up between Isner, Raonic (had the most tournament aces at the 2014 US Open) and Ivo Karlovic. Isner was only 5 aces away from Raonic in this competition last year despite playing 1 match less.
Raonic has been off form and faces some tough matches after his first round matchup against Smyczek. He'll probably face Verdasco in the 2nd round and then Feliciano Lopez/Mardy FIsh in the 3rd.
Karlovic doesn't have a good record here, the 3rd round his best finish at the US Open. He'll face Delbonis in the 1st round, followed by a potential tricky 2nd round vs Jiri Vesely. He meets Isner in the 3rd round should both men progress
Isner faces Malek Jaziri, followed by a 2nd round vs John Patrick-Smith or Youzhny. Should he get past Karlovic in the 3rd round, he will face Roger Federer. I don't give him a chance against Roger but given that the final set in the US Open is decided by a normal tiebreaker and not a champions tiebreak, the big servers will surely have a bit of extra belief that holding serve will pay dividends if they can sneak a tiebreak or two and force a 5th set.

Quick explanation on the Lopez pick: Recorded some good wins in Montreal against Raonic, Seppi, Nadal and had 3 break points against Federer at one point in the second set, he would go on to lose 2-0.
Basilashvili beat him in Wimbledon. but I expect Lopez to easily avenge that defeat. Basilashvili has only played 1 hard court match, a 3 set loss to Marsel Ilhan in Cincinnati qualifying.
Lopez has recently got married, gonna predict the honeymoon sex is over and he'll have got his energy back, comfortable win here.
