Round 1: Ernests Gulbis vs Aljaz Bedene
Pick: Bedene +1.5 sets @ -110
Gulbis is 1-2 over the last 3 years at the US Open trying to defend a (-1.5 set) spread. He's also 1-2 trying to do it this year as well. Bedene has a terrible grand slam record, 1-9 but he managed his first ever grand slam win in Wimbledon this year.
It really should have came earlier in the year, Bedene reaching the final in Chennai, eased through qualifying in Australia only to draw Novak Djockovic in the first round. To be fair to Bedene, he has lost to Djockovic, Tsonga, Thiem and Kevin Anderson in the opening rounds of Grand Slams, and you'd have to feel he needs to seize this opportunity of picking up a second main draw win.
The winner of this one meets Gilles Simon or Donald Young. Bedene recorded a nice win over Simon in Winston Salem this week before losing in straight sets to Pierre Hughes Hebert, but the 3 hour battle the previous night had obviously taken it's toll. He should be fresh to battle Gulbis on Monday/Tuesday. Expect a tight one but surely some value in the Bedene moneyline @+162 also.
