Don't be stupid and compare the Olympics to a non grans slam event like monte carlo.
The olympics should be considered "the fifth grand slam" every four years. This is because they are playing for their country in front of the whole world
Yet 3 of the top 4 greatest in history have no gold medals??
Fed 17 slams. Zero gold Rafa 14 slams. One gold Sampras 14 slams. No gold Djokovic 12 slams. No gold
Wake up man. Don't be stupid. Please.
jesus dude you dont get it... there is a simple reason for your explanation: BEST OF 3 SETS until the final
an underdog has much better chance in bestof3

Technically Roger did win Gold....playing doubles with Stan Wawrinka...
and i would say interest in the olympics is basically the same reason why some the best players ever never played the Australian open
Scheduling wasn't popular for either. the tour is already a grind packed... and you go to play to keep your ranking up so you can have a good seed draw at the majors.
And last year in london... grass....year before... hybrid turf.... after wimbledon a lot of players want to move on to their hard court preparation and not the olympics which often was a different surface.
Also the olympics did not always provide money payouts of any kind or any compensation or sponsorship. The tour top to bottom didn't always pay that great.

and the top players dont care this olympics as you can see now... the remaining best 4 players reached the semis...
don't get me wrong i agree with you, found it strange winning a gold medal isn't that important across the board as you would think.
Also i forgot Davis cup.... your representing your country there... that undermines the olympics.... Sampras Courier Agassi actively played Davis cup... on the coat tails of McEnroe and conners who also took that very seriously. I've noticed that top players after playing Davis cup matches, men or women side... often go on to lose their next regular tour matches. extra emotions i guess. and those matches are usually played on different surfaces and it messes with their rhythm going to the next season.... clay hard grass so on.
Last.... just like the many young men on the PGA tour.... I'm sure some of the tennis players aren't thrilled with the person virus in Rio that apparently makes your kids have a beatle juice size shrunken heads. these are all young adults who prob want to have kids someday.
and in Rio's Case.... i can't name one major ATP or WTA tournament in South america.... that is usually the 2nd or 3rd level clay tournaments for players i couldn't even recognize. mostly for players who like to play clay year round. or young players developing.

And Djokovic went to the olympics but with a party social mind set more so....AThens i believe..... thats where he met his current wife! some would say that is better than a gold medal. ha ha ...
and remember Joker had heat and conditioning respitaroy issues for years .... he had trouble finishing US opens Strong. thinking about that one especially Roddick beat him to make the final.

PS For that reason I really like Puig to maybe win the Gold!!!
she is from Puerto Rico... has a def ethnic culture attachment to south america... She is playing out of her mind right now.
She beat Petra who was playing very very well.... overcame a lot of tough points over 3 sets. Kerber is playing at a very high level .... last match she saved 10 of 10 break points. Puig may have the ground game to convert some of those break point rallies. at these odds I'm putting a few bucks on Puig. kerber has won a major already this year and got to a semi too this year. This gold medal would mean the world to puig. her top achievement of her career to date.

yes, some players didnt put the full effort into the Olympic games. Some went to Rio to have a good time. Some didnt do well on the slow hard courts as they had hoped. Some are looking to Cincy and USOpen. Some got incredibly nervous playing for their country. Some got sick/injured (I feel very bad for Dustin Brown....)
But this tournament means a lot for many players. Djoker and DelPopo crying after their first round match.....Puig's incredible and emotional run (she was playing well going into Rio). Nadal and Lopez's emotional wins to get Gold.
and on and on.....

the thread is so overblown.
