The other thing about serving/bartending is that your wage pays a large portion of your taxes. So if someone is making 40K/yr waiting tables, it would take a 52K/yr job to make the same amount of money.
I'm averaging $1300/wk where I'm working and it's the slow season. Best part is I'm only working 30-35 hours a week. Not all serving/bartending jobs blow ass. Some are actually fun in addition to profitable.
LVWAR- your logic is severely flawed. You think because this happened at a restaurant that only ex-servers would be pissed? What if the situation was in retail? Would only the people who've worked in retail be getting upset? The point is that is was a douchebag move to another person/establishment, not where the setting was.

I did the same thing, worked at an upscale joint while going to college
and made a nice living..and the hours werent bad, less than full time..plus some fellow servers you met made the job even better..
The
place I worked was tough..servers did a TON of work, much more than
other upscale places I have dined, but still it was worth it. And what
people are saying about bartending in a nice place is spot on. I have a
friend who I worked with during college who STILL bartends at the same
place and this is 9 yrs later, PLUS the guy is a stock broker during
the days.
I did report what was required, I saw too many
servers getting audited and having some hefty penalties for trying to
cheat the government, I decided against IRS roulette.
If I had
to again, if my family needed the dough, I would serve even
now..wouldnt be as easy since I am getting old and decrepit..but I
would do it if I had to.

I could've sworn I logged onto www.RestaurantServiceWorkers.com instead of Covers. The guy stiffed a waiter and the pub of a few bucks and these fools are calling for his death. Get over it.

wow...never realized this would be such a popular subject. Sorry for the late update...i've been out of town the last few days.
I went back to the pub on Saturday, by myself, with a plan to be put in motion . Like I mentioned before, I know how to work a chick.
In coming up with a plan of attack...I put the following four pieces of info up on the white board:
1. I owed her $29.78
2. She was kind of cute
3. I wasnt going to tell her the truth
4. She probably wouldnt remember me ... as I waited long enough
These Facts + FnS = Can't lose situation
I went to the pub last Saturday, early evening by myself, sat down in her section again, and ordered a beer and nachos. Played the nice, conversational, innocent guy role as we chatted a few times while she served me.
She brought me the bill, and told me to take my time. I looked at the receipt, total came to $13.25....[note: plan working to perfection]. I walked up to her a few minutes later (she was standing by the bar) and gave her $45.00 and said "don't worry about it". I started to walk away, and she said "one sec" .... proceeded to write her name/phone number down on a flyer and handed it to me, saying "have a good night".
Guys, it was pretty much that easy - no bullshitting.
Anyways, I didnt want to call her Sunday...would have been too soon. I then had to leave for a work trip for the last few days and just returned this morning. Gave her a call earlier this evening but no answer...i'll give her another shout tomorrow.
So that's it boys. You guys taught me a solid lesson here.

I don't think this ever happened... FnS is pulling your leg. No way this is a serious post. The picture was stolen from another posters myspace and is so dorky that it would NEVER be posted seriously. There would be nothing to gain by posting this If it actually happened. Good job though FnS, you got a lot of knuckleheads riled up. I remember only a couple of people that actually signed off at the end of a post, let alone have a link to a douchebag picture on their signature.

Maybe you guys have trouble reading. I said exculding the servers at upscale places like Mortons. I know those guys make good money because my tip just for 2 people is around $20 thus the average tip per table should be around double that. I have no doubt upscale resterant servers, caters, and resort servers make a good living, but you guys are the vast minority in the food service business. The Majority of servers in the USA work in places like Outback and Diners where they get payed $80-$90 per day with tips. Upscale joints also don't serve clubs.
Thus you should learn to read before talking about the exception I already mentioned.
Do most people who work Retail get alot of money? Fuck no. $8-10 per hour is average. However the people who work in Gucci stores do get paid a very decent amount. Do that rep the majority? Fuck not. So quit saying servers make alot of money because your ass happen to work in a "Gucci" when the majoriy work in malls.

If a guy buys a bootleg copy of some movie like 300, do you wish DEATH on him like these people are? No, because you arn't in the movie business and it doesn't effect you. Even if theft like that is against your morals, you still have to admitt there are many overeactions in this thread. Similar to rape victims hearing about a rape.
