Trump National Doral course notes
Miami’s Trump National Doral hosts the LIV Golf Team Championship for the second consecutive year. Doral is a Par-72, 7,725-yard track most recently re-designed by Gil Hanse in 2014.
This is an absolute beast of a course that's often regarded as one of the most difficult tracks to play in professional golf. To me, that will greatly benefit the likes of Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, and Bryson DeChambeau as those guys have plenty of experience playing in low-scoring tournaments with major championship vibes.
LIV Golf Team Championship picks and predictions
Smash Golf Club to win outright (+1,600)
I just referenced Brooks Koepka above, and I think he can lead Smash GC up the ladder and to the championship on Sunday. This number is so long purely because they don't have a bye. They'll need to win on Friday and Saturday to even have a chance on Sunday.
With that said, if anyone in this field can do it, it’s the Koepka-led team. Koepka is coming off his win at Jeddah (where I picked him to win at 18/1, humble brag), which marked his second win of the season and third win on LIV Golf.
That ties him with Cameron Smith and Talor Gooch for the most in LIV’s short history. He’s in great form, particularly his iron play, which is essential for success at Doral. You need to hit greens here and that's no easy task on this course. On LIV this season, Koepka is T7 in greens in regulation percentage (GIR%).
Add to the fact that five-time major champion Brooks Koepka should thrive in a low-scoring event, and Smash GC could make a run this week. It’s also worth noting that they finished third here last season.
A huge part of that third-place finish was the play of Jason Kokrak, who led the team with a 68 on Sunday at Doral. This season, Kokrak ranks even higher than Brooks in GIR% (fifth).
If Kokrak and Koepka replicate their success, then this team will be live in the final round, even with the likely poor play we'll get from Chase Koepka and Matthew Wolff.
Pick: Smash Golf Club to win outright (+1,600 at DraftKings — 0.5 units)
LIV Golf Team Championship event format
The LIV Golf season finale is a team tournament, so stay with me here as I break it down. In Friday’s quarterfinals, eight teams compete in a match-play format. Those four winning teams advance to Saturday’s semifinals, where they take on the four teams that earned a bye (4Aces, Crushers, Torque, and RangeGoats).
Saturday’s semifinals are also match-play format. Sunday’s finals then bring back all the “eliminated” teams to compete in a stroke-play competition using individual scoring from each of the players (so all 12 squads are golfing).
With that said, only the four winning teams from Saturday’s semifinals can finish between 1-4 on Sunday while the four winning teams from Friday’s quarterfinals that lost on Saturday are competing for 5-8 and then the rest are battling it out for 9-12. The payout structure is the incentive to finish higher in your placement bracket.
