Florida legal sports betting updates
The ongoing legal battle in Florida regarding online sports betting stems from the state’s Seminole Tribe Compact which was ruled invalid by the federal government in 2021. Then, an appeals court decision reversed this ruling later in 2021, allowing Hard Rock Bet to relaunch its online sportsbook in Florida in November. West Flagler Associates continues to battle in court regarding the Seminole Tribe’s perceived monopoly on sports betting in Florida.
Hard Rock Bet and its brand are controlled by the Seminole Tribe, which is the only online sportsbook available to sports bettors physically present in Florida. West Flagler Associates has filed a new sports betting brief to the U.S. Supreme Court claiming that the Florida Supreme Court’s denial of their sports betting petition, which sought to invalidate the state's online sports betting law via constitutional grounds, was an incorrect ruling.
Now, a motion to extend the time needed to file a response to a request for U.S. Supreme Court review was granted by judges on April 5. This gives the judges until May 13 to weigh in with another ruling on the West Flagler Associated Ltd. vs. Haaland case, which is predicated on Hard Rock, owned by the Seminole Tribe, operating as the sole sports betting entity in Florida.
