A Power Five athletics program continues to face allegations of unlawful use of legal sports betting.
Iowa State University offensive lineman Jake Remsburg is reportedly the latest athlete at the Big 12 institution to be suspended following an investigation into the illegal use of online betting sites, according to ESPN. Remsburg, a redshirt senior from West Des Moines, was absent at ISU’s matchup against Northern Iowa as he faces a six-game suspension from the NCAA.
"We will not comment on any individual's case, however, we will continue to support and standby our student-athletes if they elect to appeal their SAR [student-athlete reinstatement] decision," said ISU in a statement.
Growing trend
Remsburg joins a growing list of athletes impacted by incidents of unlawful sports betting.
In August, ISU quarterback Hunter Dekkers was charged with tampering with records following a probe into illegal sports wagering, according to The Des Moines Register. Dekkers, a redshirt junior who threw for 3,044 yards in 2022, allegedly placed wagers on DraftKings that amounted to more than $2,799. Dekkers also joins sophomore offensive lineman Dodge Sauser and sophomore wrestler Paniro Johnson as ISU athletes charged with tampering with records following the NCAA’s investigation into unlawful wagering.
The probe, led by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, also included ISU running back Jirehl Brock and fellow team members Isaiah Lee, DeShawn Hanika, and Jacob Remsburg. The group reportedly bet on ISU games and even wagered against their own team, which violates the NCAA’s betting guidelines.
The University of Iowa is also facing the challenges of prohibited sports betting. Last month, charges were filed against current Iowa football player Jack Johnson and two former players — Arland Bruce IV and Reggie Bracy — for tampering with records, per ESPN. Owen O'Brien, an Iowa student manager, has also received the same charges in the investigation.
