The Louisiana Gaming Control Board (LGCB) has released its September sports betting figures, revealing that more than $350 million was wagered through the state’s online and retail sportsbooks during the month.
Mobile sportsbooks led, accounting for more than $320 million of the September handle. The total mobile handle marks a 28.6% jump on the $248.8 million wagered through mobile sportsbooks in September 2023. With a 14.8% hold, mobile operators collected $47.2 million in revenue in September, a year-over-year 30.9% increase.
Meanwhile, close to $31.7 million was wagered with the state’s retail sportsbooks, up 1.3% from the $31.3 million handle collected in the same month last year. However, retail sports betting revenue dropped 7.8% year-over-year from $5.7 million to $5.3 million due to a slightly lower hold of 16.7%, compared to 18.3% last year.
Louisiana sports betting operators have yet to surpass the record-breaking $377 million handle set last December.
NFL sparks month-on-month growth
The sportsbooks reported even more significant growth when compared month-over-month. Mobile handle surged 46.7% from $218.2 million in August. At the same time, revenue more than doubled from the $22.7 million collected in August.
Retail operators saw their handle rise 94.1% month-on-month, with $16.3 million bet last month. Revenue generated by retail sportsbooks rose 49.3% from around $2.7 million in August.
This month-on-month rise comes as September marked the beginning of the 2024-25 NFL season, a popular time of year for sports betting in the U.S. With the Super Bowl scheduled to take place in February, sportsbooks can expect to report steady sports betting handles for the rest of the 2024 calendar year. For the first time ever, the American Gaming Association (AGA) has published predictions ahead of the NFL season, anticipating a record handle of $35 billion.
Parlay bets in the lead
The LGCB’s data reporting clouds the exact revenue generated by each sport during the month. While football wagers brought in $5.1 million of the $52.5 million revenue total, parlay bets topped the list with approximately $35.1 million. However, parlay bets are not reported by sport, so it is unclear how much of the revenue came from football parlays. Additionally, bets categorized as “other” accounted for around $9.5 million of the total.
Market | Revenue |
---|---|
Parlay | $35.1 million |
Football | $5.1 million |
Baseball | $2.2 million |
Basketball | $517,276 |
Soccer | $488,429 |
Other | $9.5 million |
