Yes, sports betting is legal in New York, but with a few specific limitations. In 2013, New York approved legalized sports betting at four upstate casinos. In June 2019, the state's gaming commission established regulations for sports betting at tribal casinos. In April 2021, statewide mobile sports betting was authorized by legislation, and the final rules were adopted in November 2021. Mobile betting became available on Jan. 8, 2022.

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo set the stage for legal sports betting in November 2013 — five years before the United States Supreme Court nixed the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act. Fast forward to today, and New York bettors can legally access nine of the best online sportsbooks.

2023: New York continues to offer both retail and mobile sports betting, with nine online sportsbook operators and retail sportsbooks operating within the state.

2022: New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed Senate Bill S8006C, authorizing three new casino licenses and modification of operational fees. Jan. 8 marked the official New York sports betting go-live date. 

2021: Then-Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation authorizing the state to issue licenses for mobile sports betting, allowing individuals to place bets through online platforms from anywhere within the state. The law requires that any mobile sports betting operator be affiliated with a licensed commercial casino in the state. 

New York legalized mobile sports betting in April, with the state approving several online sportsbook operators to offer mobile betting, including DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetRivers. In September, New York's first retail sportsbook opened at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona.

2019: New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill legalizing sports betting in the state, but it was limited to in-person wagering at four upstate casinos: Rivers Casino & Resort in Schenectady, Tioga Downs in Nichols, Resorts World Catskills in Sullivan County, and del Lago Resort & Casino in Seneca County.
