Esports betting supplier Oddin.gg has expanded its North American presence after obtaining a temporary sports betting license from the West Virginia Lottery Commission. This license, allowing both online and retail betting, marks Oddin.gg's fourth jurisdiction in North America, alongside New Jersey, Colorado, and Ontario.

“We are thrilled to achieve yet another important milestone for Oddin.gg. Acquiring the West Virginia license strengthens our position in the US market,” commented Vlastimil Venclik, co-founder and CEO of Oddin.gg, in the press release.

“Combined with new US-based operators becoming our clients, this license marks another significant step in our North American expansion strategy. The work doesn't stop here; we are actively working on acquiring further US licenses to support both existing clients and future prospects.”

Esports in West Virginia

After state lawmakers passed House Bill 4826 in 2022, wagering on esports has been legally permitted in West Virginia. Players can access esports betting sites at Betly, BetMGM, BetRivers, Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel, and Golden Nugget. The state is home to nine legal betting sites. Various odds providers power these sites, including IGT, Kambi, and William Hill.

"The new generation of bettors, the fans of competitive gaming, are constantly on a lookout for a solution that will bring them more markets, more live opportunities, higher engagement, simply said, more fun. In reward, they offer loyalty and high ARPU to operators that demonstrate understanding and passion for esports. Oddin.gg has both,” added Venclik.

Revenue on the up

The latest figures published by the West Virginia Lottery in June 2024 revealed that the sports betting revenue in June reached $3.96 million, with $3.3 million coming from online sports wagering. This gave operators a third consecutive double-digit hold of 11.9%. The betting handle in June totaled $33.5 million. The state’s year-to-date revenue total has surpassed $25 million, up 25% compared to the same period last year.

Esports continues to grow in popularity in West Virginia, particularly in the southern part of the state. According to a local news source, WVNS 59 News, universities across the state are adding majors in esports. "Every year, esports increases in value the more popular it gets," the article noted.
