iGaming Ontario, a subsidiary of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), issues a quarterly market report, detailing wagering and revenue from the Canadian province’s online sports betting sites and online casinos. And for the fiscal third quarter, ending Dec. 31, 2023, the data was decidedly positive.
Total wagers came in at $17.2 billion, up from $14.2 billion in the previous quarter. Total gaming revenues grew to $658 million, up from $540 million in Q2.
Casino games, including slots, live and computer-based table games and peer-to-peer bingo, accounted for the lion’s share of wagers. Its wagers of nearly $13.7 billion accounted for roughly 79 percent of Ontario’s total wagers.
Sports betting rebound
Meanwhile, legal sports betting, including esports, proposition, and novelty bets, had a particularly strong quarter, with wagers coming in at $3.1 billion. This was good news for the sector, which had dipped to $1.9 billion in wagers last quarter. The category accounted for 18% of Ontario’s overall wagering – up from 13% last quarter. Revenue from the category also rebounded, up nearly 45% over last quarter.
Even peer-to-peer poker improved, accounting for $431 million in wagers, up from $397 million in the previous quarter.
The average monthly spend per active player account was $186, coming in a little lower than last quarter’s $191. But that was more than offset by an improvement in the total number of active accounts. Roughly 1.2 million player accounts were active during Q3. That was up from 943,000 active player accounts in the previous quarter.
iGaming Ontario’s data includes 49 operators and 72 gaming websites with trades that occurred in Q3 and does not include promotional bets, operation costs, or other liabilities.
