Ontario’s online sports betting sites and online casinos held steady in the second quarter of 2023 compared to the first quarter, setting up operators for a strong rest of the year.
Government agency iGaming Ontario announced Wednesday that $14.2 billion was wagered from sports betting and internet casinos from July 1 to September 30.
That fell in line with Q1’s $14 billion. Revenue slipped slightly from $545 million in Q1 to $540 million in Q2.
However, the total handle is up 132% from the same quarter in 2022 while revenue jumped 105%.
The figures from iGaming Ontario come from 46 operators and 71 private-sector gaming sites and do not include promotional bets, operation costs, or other liabilities.
About 943,000 active player accounts were active in Q2, up from 920,000 in Q1, and the average player spent $191 per month in Q2, down from $195 in Q1. online
Sports betting revenue falls
Legal sports betting, including esports, proposition, and novelty bets, accounted for $1.9 billion, or 13%, of the overall wagering in the second quarter and 22% of the gaming revenue in the most populous Canadian province.
While the handle nearly mirrored the $2 billion from Q1, the revenue fell from $138 million to $118 million in the second quarter as the 8.3% hold dropped 1.6 points.
Casino gaming represented 84% of wagering and 75% of profits while peer-to-peer poker accounted for 3% of each.
