The Philadelphia Phillies handed the Los Angeles Angels their ninth consecutive defeat on Friday night, doing so in a humiliating 10-0 fashion. Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber had two homers each in the victory.

The Phillies kept their hold on third place in the National League East after firing manager Joe Girardi earlier in the day. It was their second straight victory, but they are 3-7 in their last 10 contests. Can the Phillies keep the streak going or will the Angels finally break their nine-game losing streak?

Angels vs Phillies betting preview

Starting pitchers

Michael Lorenzen (5-2, 3.19 ERA): Lorenzen has been an anchor of a pretty decent Angels pitching staff. The 30-year-old right-hander has won three of his last five, with one loss and a no-decision. One of his victories was an eight-inning shutout over the White Sox two weeks ago. Lorenzen has pitched at least six innings in five of his last six starts. Lorenzen went 6 2-3 innings against Toronto in his last outing and gave up three runs on five hits.

Zack Wheeler (3-3, 3.16 ERA): The ace of the Philadelphia staff, Wheeler is finally starting to perform like a top pitcher. The 32-year-old righty struggled at the beginning of the season, but in his last seven games, Wheeler has gone 3-1 with a 2.06 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP. His most recent start was against the Mets five days ago and he went six strong innings, allowing one run on four hits.

Angels vs Phillies picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Run line analysis

Both the Phillies and Angels were optimistic entering the season. The Angels started off hot and at one point were leading the American League West. Suddenly, they have hit a lengthy losing streak and seen the Houston Astros blow past them for first place in the division.

Losing third baseman Anthony Rendon a week ago to a wrist injury certainly hasn’t helped, as the former All-Star helped extend the depth of the offense. The team has scored two runs in their last three games and three or fewer in four straight matches.

The Angels have lost nine straight games when scoring three or fewer runs. Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani, Taylor Ward, and Jared Walsh have combined for 187 hits and 44 homers, but the rest of the lineup isn’t producing numbers anywhere close to those.

The Phillies fired manager Joe Girardi on Friday in an effort to turn their season around. They followed that up by scoring 10 runs in Friday’s shellacking of the Angels. Bryce Harper, who has been dealing with a ligament tear in his right forearm and was questionable for Friday’s game, played and hit two home runs. Kyle Schwarber also had two dingers.

Expect the Phillies to do damage again tonight against the reeling Halos, led by the reigning NL MVP Harper.

Prediction: Phillies -1.5 (+115 at BetRivers)

Over/Under analysis

Saturday’s two starting pitchers should be able to keep this game under the total of 8.0. Lorenzen allowed just four earned runs in his last three games and has not allowed a home run during that span.

Wheeler has been equally as stingy, allowing five runs in his last three starts. He has also gone at least six innings in his last three appearances on the bump.

The Under is 10-2-2 in the last 14 meetings between the two teams. It is also 5-1 in the last six in Philadelphia at Citizens Bank Park. For the Angels, the Under has gone 3-1-1 in their last five.

Prediction: Under 8 (-105 at BetMGM)

Best bet

Bryce Harper has been dealing with a nagging torn ligament in his right forearm for most of the season. He was questionable going into Friday’s game against the Angels, but the superstar hitter said he was good to go.

That was an understatement.

Harper belted two home runs. Despite the injury, Harper has been on a tear. In 46 games and 182 at-bats, Harper, who has been solely playing as the designated hitter, has 12 home runs and a team-leading 36 RBI.

Nine of those homers have come off right-handed pitchers. Getting a homer off of Angels' righty Lorenzen will be a challenge, but Harper is running hot and it doesn't seem to matter who is throwing these days.

Pick: Bryce Harper Over 0.5 home runs (+245 at DraftKings)
