Astros vs Angels Picks and Predictions: Greinke, Houston Continue Dominance of Halos Tonight

Houston has won three of its last four and will try to stay hot with a visit to the Angels this weekend. The Astros have won six of nine against the Halos so far this season — and we like them to win again tonight as MLB betting road favorites.

The Houston Astros have won three of their last four games and will try to keep rolling in a divisional matchup against the Angels Friday night.

Los Angeles is coming off a four-game split against the Blue Jays and will look to kick off this three-game set against Houston on the right foot, although the Halos are MLB betting home underdogs tonight.

Can the Halos cool down Houston tonight? Keep reading our Astros vs. Angels MLB picks and predictions, for August 13, to find out our thoughts.

Astros vs Angels betting preview

Starting pitchers

Zack Greinke (10-3, 3.69 ERA): Greinke has faced the Angels twice this season and the veteran turned in identical performances of seven innings pitched and two earned runs allowed. On the year, Greinke is 5-0 with a 2.67 ERA when pitching on the road, and it definitely doesn’t hurt that he is 6-3 with a 3.01 ERA in 13 career starts at Angel Stadium.

Patrick Sandoval (3-5, 3.39 ERA): Sandoval has been a really nice part of this Angels rotation and he comes into this start after having allowed just four earned runs over his last 19 1-3 innings on the hill. Sandoval struck out 23 hitters over those three starts, and he’ll need some of that swing-and-miss stuff against an Astros team that has the lowest strikeout rate in the league against lefties.

Betting trend to know

Moneyline pick

Nobody in the league hits lefties quite like the Astros, who are first in MLB in both batting average and RBIs against southpaws. On top of that, Houston is second in OBP and fourth in slugging percentage against left-handed pitching.

On the season, Jose Altuve is batting .305 with five homers and 15 RBIs against lefties, while Carlos Correa is batting .288 with three homers and 16 RBIs against them. It’s not hard to see why the Astros offense is having a successful year — especially considering some of Houston’s lefty sluggers are quite good against left-handed pitching.

As for Greinke, there’s not much of a reason to worry about him. The righty has given up seven earned runs over his last two starts, but he had given up two or fewer earned runs in four of his previous six outings. The veteran also loves pitching in this building, so he should be able to come through against an Angels lineup that hasn't generated much offense lately outside of Shohei Ohtani.

PREDICTION: Astros (-146)

Over/Under pick

This season, Greinke is giving up an opponent batting average of only .198 with five homers and 14 RBIs against lefty hitters, meaning he’s well equipped to go up against this Angels lineup.

Ohtani is the engine of this Los Angeles offense, so Greinke can completely shut this team down if he can avoid letting him do too much damage. If he does that, Under bettors should be really happy with how this game looks.

The Astros will likely score four or five runs in this game, but that’s not enough to make people sweat this one. The Under is the way to go here.

PREDICTION: Under 9 (-115)
