The New York Yankees opened their weekend series with a 6-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. This afternoon's pitching matchup gives us good reason to expect even more fireworks with today's edition of Cardinals vs. Yankees predictions.

Aaron Judge is poised to break out of his mini-slump but the Red Birds' bats should be able to hold their own as well against struggling rookie Will Warren.

Read on for our best MLB picks for Saturday, August 31.

Cardinals vs Yankees prediction

My best bet
Over 9.5 (-110 at DraftKings)

My analysis

Aaron Judge had a rare 0-for-4 day at the plate on Friday — in fact, it was just his second of the month — but he and his New York Yankees teammates could be poised for a big day as they face off against Kyle Gibson, who’s been brutal for the St. Louis Cardinals in August.

Gibson lasted just 4 1/3 innings on Monday against the San Diego Padres after allowing seven earned runs on five hits and a whopping four walks. It was the second time he's allowed seven runs to plate in three starts, and his ERA has ballooned to 6.91 ERA in August.

Things don’t look much better for the hosts, though, as starter Will Warren has been slammed through the first four starts of his career. The 25-year-old has yet to pick up a win and carries a 9.81 ERA after allowing five earned runs through only three innings vs. the Colorado Rockies last Saturday.

The Over is an easy play as it’s cashed in each of Gibson’s last five starts and all four of Warren’s outings.

Aaron Judge pick: Hammer time

My best bet
Aaron Judge Over 0.5 home runs (+230 at bet365)

My analysis

After hitting nine homers in 10 games from August 14-25, Judge has failed to go yard in four straight outings — a relatively lengthy drought for the former 62-home run man. That could change this afternoon as the Yankees star looks to tee off against Gibson, who’s been susceptible to the long ball of late.

Gibson has given up six home runs through his last five starts while his 6.91 ERA ranks second worst among all National League starters in August.

Judge has hit 36 of his 51 homers against righties this year and owns a slightly better batting average vs right-handed pitchers (.338 vs .319), so he should be able to make some good contact this afternoon.

Cardinals vs Yankees same-game parlay (SGP)

Yankees TT Over 5.5

Aaron Judge Over 0.5 home runs

Will Warren Over 2.5 earned runs allowed

New York’s offense has cooled off slightly of late but the Judge-led Yankees are averaging 5.07 runs per game this season — the second-best mark in the majors behind only the Diamondbacks (5.36). With Gibson giving up a combined 21 runs over his last 27 1/3 innings, I like the Yankees’ chances of running up the score in this one.

By that same token, Warren hasn’t shown much ability to shut down big-league hitters through his first four starts as he’s allowed four or more earned runs in three of those contests.
