Starting pitchers

Taylor Widener (1-1, 5.05 ERA): In his second season with the Diamondbacks and first as a starter, Widener has made nine starts in 2021 yet boasts a record of just 1-1. His last start, at the beginning of August against the Giants, saw him chased after 4 1-3 innings as he allowed five hits and five earned runs, walking three while striking out seven.

Yu Darvish (7-6, 3.48 ERA): Darvish has continued his consistent level of play in his first season with the Padres, with an ERA of 3.48 and a WHIP of 1.019. His strikeouts per nine innings, though the lowest since 2017, has remained above 10.0 (currently 10.5).

Betting trend to know

The Over is 4-0 in the last four games between Arizona and San Diego. Find more MLB betting trends for Diamondbacks vs. Padres.

Runline pick

The Diamondbacks were dealt a brutal run of games but have seemingly collapsed over the last couple of weeks, as series against the Dodgers and Giants saw them drop five of seven by an average margin of 5.6 runs ahead of their series against San Diego. That includes Widener's last start, where he was pulled after 4 1-3 innings and nearly 100 pitches in an eventual 11-8 loss.

A recent poor stretch for the Padres, who are 4-6 over their last 10, was made worse by Fernando Tatis Jr.'s most recent injury. The phenom's latest injury is a blow to San Diego's chances of making noise in the ultra-competitive NL West, but they did put together consecutive 8-1 wins after Tatis Jr.'s injury.

Even in Tatis Jr.'s absence, San Diego has plenty of firepower, especially in such a favorable matchup. On the year, the Padres are in the Top-10 in runs per nine innings and batting average, while sitting just outside the Top-10 in on-base percentage and homers per game. That lineup gets the welcome sight of the Diamondbacks' fielding, which ranks last or second-last in runs and home runs allowed, as well as opposing batting average and on-base percentage.

The Diamondbacks, already undergoing a lost season, have unraveled and regularly bleed runs. San Diego, meanwhile, is more well-rounded, better at the plate and in the field, and boasts a big-time advantage in starting pitchers. The Padres should win this one with ease, and that means finding betting value on the runline.

PREDICTION: Padres -1.5 (-123)

Over/Under pick

Both the Diamondbacks and Padres have been reliable Over bets in 2021, with Arizona 59-49-2 and San Diego 60-49-1 this season. With the total hitting the board at 7.5 for this one, the Over is once again very inviting.

Arizona has not seen a total below 8.5 since June 27 (coincidentally, in a game against Darvish and the Padres that finished with nine runs), going 16-14-1 O/U since then. The Padres, meanwhile, have seen seven totals below 8.5 in their last 10, with an 8-2 O/U mark over that stretch.

The Over has hit in four straight games between these two, and even if it will require the Padres to do most of the heavy lifting, that trend will continue.

PREDICTION: Over 7.5 (-120)
