While the Los Angeles Dodgers are arguably the best team in baseball, there’s no doubt they are mired in an early-season slump. L.A. has now lost nine of their last 12 ball games including dropping the first two in their series against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Things won’t get any easier on the Dodgers, as they will be slight favorites going up against Brewers’ ace Brandon Woodruff. Check out our MLB free picks and predictions for Dodgers vs. Brewers on Saturday, May 1, with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET.

Starting pitchers
Dustin May (1-1, 2.53 ERA): May, the former Dodgers top prospect, looks like he is tapping into all that potential early on this season. The right-hander has ridiculous movement on his sinker and has a great curve to keep hitters off-balance, limiting opponents to a .188 batting average. May’s strikeouts are also way up this year.
Brandon Woodruff (2-0, 1.55 ERA): Woodruff makes up one-half of the Brewers' fantastic one-two punch at the top of their rotation, along with Corbin Burnes. The right-hander had a bit of a rough start on Opening Day but has allowed just two earned runs on seven hits over his last four starts.

Moneyline pick
Even the best baseball teams can get stuck in slumps, and that’s exactly what has happened to the Dodgers, who are just 3-9 in their last 12 games. The biggest reason for the slump is that runs have dried up.
L.A. has plated just 3.25 runs per game during this 12-game slide and over the past two weeks, they are hitting just .185 with a .606 OPS. The only team hitting worse over that stretch is the Detroit Tigers. Now, they have to go against Woodruff, who has looked unhittable for most of the season. Woodruff has a 0.72 WHIP and is limiting opponents to a ridiculously low .134 batting average.
While the Brewers are not what we would call a “good offensive team”, they have been a bit better of late, ranking 14th in OPS over their last 14 games and could get both Christian Yelich and Lorenzo Cain back any day now. They have a tough matchup against May, but the Dodgers bullpen has been a bit underwhelming.
The Dodgers can easily win this game and are favored for a reason, but these two teams are trending in opposite directions at the moment and it’s rare to get a value like this with a guy like Woodruff.
PREDICTION: Brewers (+110)
Over/Under pick
The total for this awesome pitching matchup is an unsurprising 7.0. As noted, Woodruff is dealing right now and is more than capable of keeping a slumping Dodgers lineup down.
And on the other side is May, who is pitching almost nearly as well, going against a Brewers lineup that is hitting a little better, but still ranks 23rd in scoring and 27th in OPS. On top of that, they strike out a ton and May is punching out 13.5 batters per nine innings.
Two starters throwing gas and two slumping lineups. This one has pitcher’s duel written all over it. Betting the Under is the way to go in this one.
PREDICTION: Under 7 (-110)
