The Colorado Rockies host the Los Angeles Dodgers at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado on Friday, July 16. These teams will be playing their first games since the All-Star break, so there could be a little rust. However, this should be a fun series with both teams potentially in for some high-scoring performances.

Starting pitchers

Julio Urias (11-3, 3.64 ERA): Urias has always had ridiculous stuff and he is now putting it all together as a member of this Los Angeles rotation. Last year, the lefty had a 3-0 record and 3.27 ERA over 10 starts, but he is up to 18 starts this season. The results have been excellent, and Urias was red hot before the All-Star break. The lefty also had a great start at Coors Field earlier in the year, as he pitched seven innings of one-run ball.

Antonio Senzatela (2-8, 4.58 ERA): Senzatela has had a pretty rough season for the Rockies, but he has been good at Coors Field. In 10 starts in Colorado, the righty has a 3.75 ERA. The only issue is that he did give up seven earned runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings against this Dodgers team at home. That lousy outing is one of the only reasons his numbers at home aren’t awesome, but it wasn’t a fluke. This Dodgers offense is excellent and he’ll need to be a lot better.

Moneyline pick

The Dodgers are huge favorites in this road game, so there’s not a whole lot of value in taking them straight. It’s more understandable if you’d want to throw them into a moneyline parlay, but the value is with the Rockies as home underdogs in this one.

Coming off of the All-Star break, it’s entirely possible that good teams will slip a bit before getting back into the swing of things. Los Angeles has won three of its last four heading into the break, but the team might have cooled off with five days of rest. Across all sports, the few days following All-Star games can create a little more randomness than normal.

On top of the more general reasons to back an underdog in a game like this, the Rockies also happen to have the fourth-best batting average in baseball when facing left-handed pitching. Keep an eye on C.J. Cron here. The 31-year-old is batting .310 with four homers and 12 RBIs in 71 at bats against lefties this year. He has a ton of pop and could give the Rockies a boost in this game. Also, Ryan McMahon is 5 for 10 with a double and a homer off of Urias in his career, so he’s another guy that could provide some production.

Overall, the Rockies are far from a sure thing, but they have what you want when looking to back a huge underdog: a puncher’s chance.

PREDICTION: Rockies ML (+164)

Over/Under pick

This Rockies offense isn’t quite like the ones of the past, as they don’t have nearly the same explosiveness. However, Colorado is capable of getting it going on occasion, and this represents a good opportunity for the lineup. The Rockies are good against lefties and are playing at home. They can easily plate six or seven runs if Urias doesn’t bring his absolute best stuff, and they also have a few guys that have hit him hard in the past. Meanwhile, Senzatela isn’t going to shut down this Dodgers offense, so Los Angeles will also contribute to this total.

The Rockies might be somewhat unlikely to win as an underdog pick, but this Over really should come through.

PREDICTION: Over 11.0 (-110)
