MLB sharp money and line movement report

By Patrick Everson

Oakland landed on BetMGM Nevada's odds board as -210 chalk Thursday night, dipped to -180 by early this evening and is -190 at 7:30 p.m. ET. "I just took a sharp play on the A's and went from -180 to -190," BetMGM Nevada's Scott Shelton said. "Tickets are running 3/1 and money close to 5/1 on the A's." The total fell from 8.5 flat (-110) to 8 (Over -115), with ticket count 6/1 and money 4/1 on the Over.

Indians vs A's betting preview

Starting pitchers

Eli Morgan (1-3, 8.44 ERA): Morgan has done a good job of giving the Indians a chance to win in his starts, as the righty has allowed four or fewer earned runs in each of his last three outings. Morgan pitched exactly five innings in each of those starts, and the Indians will be hoping for more of the same here. Sure, it’d be ideal for Cleveland if Morgan could be a little better, but the team is capable of winning if it can give him a little run support.

Chris Bassitt (10-2, 3.28 ERA): Heading into the All-Star break, Bassitt had allowed one or fewer earned runs in three of his last four starts. The righty also happens to be 4-2 with a 2.55 ERA in eight starts at home this season. Bassitt has just been extremely comfortable when pitching at RingCentral Coliseum, and he now gets to face a very beatable Indians lineup.

Moneyline pick

The Athletics are sizable favorites at home, making them a tough team to back. However, it’s tough to advocate for betting on the Indians in a game like this one.

Morgan has allowed at least three runs in each of his five starts for Cleveland this year, and the 25-year-old doesn’t exactly have the type of stuff to make it through this Oakland lineup unscathed. Morgan does not have a lot of velocity on his fastball, and his changeup is the best pitch he has. However, an inexperienced righty going against an Athletics lineup that features quite a few guys that can hit right-handed pitching isn’t exactly the best matchup.

Matt Olson, one of the league’s best power hitters, could easily come through with a dinger in this game for Oakland. Olson was in the Home Run Derby, so it’s possible he’ll struggle a bit to adjust to big-league pitching again. But Olson is the type of guy that could crush a pitcher like Morgan, who has given up two homers in three of his last four starts.

Meanwhile, Bassitt is as good as anyone right now when he’s pitching at home for this Athletics team. Cleveland’s offense isn’t anything special, so there’s no reason to believe the righty will struggle here.

PREDICTION: Athletics ML (-205)

Over/Under pick

Three of the last four games in which Bassitt has started have gone Under the total, and that’s because the righty was dominant in each of those games. Look for Bassitt to bring some similar noise when facing the Indians at home, as the righty has been unhittable when pitching in Oakland this season. That means that Morgan would have to be absolutely miserable in order for this Over to come through, but the righty has been decent enough to make this Under the right play.

PREDICTION: Under 8.5 (-110)
