Starting pitchers
Joe Ross (5-9, 4.02 ERA): Ross gave up just three earned runs and struck out seven batters in 6.1 innings against the Philadelphia Phillies on August 5, but Washington was unable to ultimately win that game. Ross will be hoping for a better all-around effort from his teammates in this one, but it is worth noting that he pitched five innings of one-run ball in his only trip to Citi Field this season.
Marcus Stroman (7-11, 2.83 ERA): Stroman has allowed three or fewer earned runs in 14 of his last 15 trips to the hill, but the Mets just don’t seem to provide much run support for him. Still, New York is lucky whenever the righty is on the mound, as he does constantly put the team in a position to win. Stroman did, however, give up four earned runs in only four innings of work in his only start against the Nats this year, which was back in April.

Moneyline pick
Back on April 24, Ross actually outdueled Stroman at Citi Field, as he threw six innings of one-run ball. Stroman allowed four earned runs in four innings in that game, and it just goes to show that this isn’t the massive pitching mismatch that it would appear to be on paper. Ross is way more talented than his numbers suggest, as he has some real swing-and-miss stuff. That makes Washington a live dog in this game, and that’s especially true against a New York team that just hasn’t been able to win games lately.
Don’t be surprised if Juan Soto ends up being the difference in this game. The Nationals star is batting .297 with 18 homers and 58 RBIs this season, but he is batting .326 against right-handed pitching. He also happens to be 2 for 3 with a double and a homer in his brief history against Stroman, so he clearly likes something about this matchup.
The shorter game also means that Washington’s lousy bullpen won’t be as much of a factor here.
PREDICTION: Nationals ML (+170)
Over/Under pick
Being that this is going to be a shorter game, this total isn’t as low as you think it is. Also, the Mets were on a four-game Under streak before Tuesday’s postponed game, and they had scored only seven runs over that span. Meanwhile, the Nationals offense has not been very good lately, as the team has scored four or fewer runs in each of the last three.
With neither of these teams looking likely for an offensive explosion, it’s best to just roll with these two talented pitchers to come through and help the Under cause. The Under has hit in 12 of Ross’ 18 starts this year, and it has also come in for 15 of Stroman’s 22 starts.
PREDICTION: Under 7.0 (-110)
