Two of the best teams in baseball square off as the Baltimore Orioles (76-56) visit the Los Angeles Dodgers (78-53) on Tuesday night.
My Orioles vs. Dodgers predictions are riding Jack Flaherty’s hot hand on the mound, with an added Shohei Ohtani prop in my MLB picks for Tuesday, August 27.
Orioles vs Dodgers prediction
My best bet
Jack Flaherty to record win (-105 at bet365)
My analysis
Jack Flaherty has been one of the MLB’s best pitchers this season, sporting a 3.00 ERA through 22 starts. His 3.22 xERA and 3.22 FIP are both impressive numbers, so there’s no immediate reason to expect a dropoff in quality.
That’s good news for the team that acquired him at the deadline, the Los Angeles Dodgers. They hope for another victory at home, but the Baltimore Orioles are a tough opponent.
Flaherty can be assuaged that Baltimore has been running cold at the plate, ranking 25th in wRC+ (87) and 26th in wOBA (.286) against right-handed pitching in the last 15 days. That’ll make it tough for the Os to get over the hump against a Dodgers team that is 43-23 at home.
On the flip side, Baltimore trots out Cole Irvin and his 4.82 ERA. His 5.74 xERA and 4.61 aren’t very pretty, either, and his profile is concerning. Irvin doesn’t strike out many batters (15.6% K rate) and allows too much hard contact, ranking in the second percentile in barrel rate (12.6%).
The Orioles haven’t had much success lately when he’s on the hill, dropping each of his last eight starts. Perhaps that’s not a coincidence.
The Dodgers typically feast against LHP (116 wRC+ and .334 wOBA) and set up well again here in a game where nine mph winds will be blowing out to right field at the time of the first pitch.
L.A. figures to have a substantial advantage while Flaherty is in the game facing Irvin. The player prop market has the veteran at -105 to record a win, and I’m snapping up that bet considering Irvin’s futility and Baltimore’s recent struggles against RHP.
Shohei Ohtani player prop
My best bet
Over 1.5 total bases (+100 at DraftKings)
My analysis
Shohei Ohtani is too good of a hitter to be concerned about left-on-lefty splits in such an advantageous matchup. The phenom has been right at home in Dodger Stadium with a .302 BA and 22 home runs.
He’s averaging 2.5 total bases across his last 10 games and has exceeded 1.5 total bases in five of his last seven. The MLB world as a whole simply can’t put a handle on Ohtani, so I’m expecting Irvin and the Baltimore relievers to have a tough time finding outs.
The 30-year-old has been a force at home against LHP with a 165 wRC+ and .406 wOBA. He’s also found success against Irvin in the past, going 8-for-27 with two doubles and two home runs.
Orioles vs Dodgers same-game parlay (SGP)
If I’m betting on Irvin having a tough outing, I must be bullish on the Dodgers to cover their run line with a starting pitcher like Flaherty on the bump.
Another hitter in Dave Roberts’ lineup who figures to have success on Tuesday is Mookie Betts. The diminutive slugger has been hot lately, recording two or more total bases in five of his last seven contents. Betts has a 151 wRC+ and .385 wOBA against southpaws and should feast yet again.
