Phillies vs Yankees Picks and Predictions: Backup Bombers Make It Four Straight for NYY

We don't blame you for not knowing half of the Yankees' roster right now — but they've won three straight and are looking for a mini-sweep of the Phillies. With lackluster pitching on for both sides, we like New York to win again in an offensive bonanza.

Don't look now, but the New York Yankees are putting a winning streak together and bombing in the Bronx.

They may not be the Bronx Bombers, but the guys that wore pinstripes last night launched a few home runs in beating Philadelphia and winning their third straight game.

The Yankees are MLB betting favorites tonight as well, with some questionable pitching for both sides, as they look to sweep this two-game set against the Phillies and make it four straight victories.

Here are our best free MLB picks and predictions for Phillies vs. Yankees on Wednesday, July 21 with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. ET.

MLB sharp money and line movement report

By Patrick Everson

With Philadelphia not naming its starter until this afternoon – Triple-A call-up Spencer Howard will take the mound – the moneyline for this interleague clash has only been on the board for about an hour, as of 4:30 p.m. ET. TwinSpires opened New York a very slim -110 favorite and moved to -109, with Philly -108, a virtual pick 'em. The Yankees are drawing 61 percent of tickets and 57 percent of cash on the moneyline. The total of 10 is shaded slightly to the Over, which is taking 72 percent of tickets/70 percent of money.

Starting pitchers

Spencer Howard (0-2, 5.82 ERA): The Phillies announced this will be a bullpen game tonight, and Howard be the first arm on the mound. The 24-year-old righty was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley today and is one of Philadelphia's top pitching prospects but has struggled in nine appearances this season. He has pitched more than three innings just twice this year, so don't expect him to log a lot of innings, but as Philadelphia did manage to not use its top relievers yesterday, we should expect the likes of Ranger Suarez, Archie Bradley, and Hector Neris to make appearances at some point.

Asher Wojciechowski (0-0, -.-- ERA): The Yankees brought up the 32-year-old journeyman righty from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday, with the expectation that he will start, or work in bulk behind an opener, for tonight's game. Wojciechowski posted a 6.81 ERA in 10 MLB appearances (seven starts) last season with Baltimore and has a 5.68 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in four Triple-A appearances this season, but he threw four scoreless relief innings with seven strikeouts in his most recent professional appearance — at least that's a positive... right?

Moneyline pick

Another day, another Yankees star sat out with an ailment (this time it was DJ LeMahieu with a stomach illness) as the New York offense continued to sput... wait, what? The Yankees scored six runs and won their third straight game?

We'll forgive you if you find it as hard to believe as we do that the Yankees — with Rougned Odor (.225) batting third and a bottom half of the order consisting of Rob Brantly (yes, that Rob Brantly), Greg Allen, Estevan Florial, and Tyler Wade — launched four home runs and toppled the Phillies 6-4 last night, marking the team's eighth win in its last 11 contests.

New York will likely have LeMahieu back in the lineup tonight, but the unheralded face of this Yankees' unheralded run led by a pile of no-names is outfielder Greg Allen. The 28-year-old journeyman has played four games for New York this season and is has a .583 on-base percentage with five runs scored and two stolen bases. While it's clearly a small sample size and he will surely cool off, he does add an element of speed to a Yankees squad that is dead-last in the majors in steals and has injected some life into the bottom of the lineup.

The Yanks also scratched out last night's win against one of Philly's top arms, Aaron Nola, and will get to face a potpourri of relievers this evening. New York isn't exactly trotting out an ace, or even a decent starter, for that matter, but the Phils have scored four runs or fewer in three of their last four games.

With such wildcards on the mound from both teams, any outcome wouldn't surprise us tonight — but the Yankees, behind these no-names and backups to the backups, are scrapping, fighting, and playing hard. It's working right now, so we're going to keep riding this good pinstripe mojo and back the home side tonight.

PREDICTION: Yankees (-130)

Over/Under pick

If you couldn't tell from the paragraph above, we think just a couple of runs will get scored tonight.

It's very rare when throwing out six or seven pitchers in one game that they all will pitch well, so we're expecting the Phillies' bullpen plan to result in at least one or two arms coughing up some runs to the current guys bombing in the Bronx.

As for the Phillies, while their offense has slowed down a touch the last few games, they are still fifth in MLB in runs scored in July — and the last time Wojciechowski was good was in Double-A half a decade ago.

We're not sure there's a total that could scare us off the Over tonight — don't overthink this.

PREDICTION: Over 10 (-110)
