Real Gonsolin
It seems kind of unfair the way the Los Angeles Dodgers keep pumping out pitching prospect after pitching prospect, and Tony Gonsolin is their latest to start reaching his potential.
The right-hander is having a breakout 2022 campaign and has allowed just nine earned runs over his 10 starts this season, never giving up more than two in an outing.
But it’s the way he mixes his heater with three effective off-speed pitches (a slider, splitter, and curveball) that keeps hitters off-balance. As a result, he creates a ton of soft contact. He’s pitching to an expected ERA of 2.60 and is limiting opponents to a .209 expected batting average.
So, he could be a problem for the Chicago White Sox tonight.
The first two months of the season have not gone as planned for Chicago. Most penciled the White Sox in as the AL Central champs before the season started, but they sit four games behind the Minnesota Twins at this point. And they have plenty of issues, including injuries, but it has been their inability to hit right-handers that's been the most shocking.
The White Sox were expected to have a potent lineup but rank 23rd in batting average and 28th in OPS when going against righties this season. And to make matters worse, Tim Anderson, who was carrying the load for the offense, has hit the injured list with a groin injury.
Meanwhile, Chicago counters Gonsolin with veteran Johnny Cueto. And while Cueto had some success early in his return to the big leagues, he’s now allowed nine runs on 16 hits over his last two starts.
We’re betting Gonsolin factors into the decision and gets the win, something he has done in five of his last six starts.
Pick: Tony Gonsolin to record a win (+140 at DraftKings)
Clipped Wings
I expect that anyone inside the Los Angeles Angels locker room would call the team’s current state anything but heavenly.
The Halos have lost 13 straight and have dismissed manager Joe Maddon. And that’s just the start of their problems.
During this slide, the Angels rank 28th in OPS and wRC+ and have been striking out a ton, particularly against right-handed pitchers. In fact, they now have the second-worst strikeout rate in MLB when going against righties, only behind the free-swinging Atlanta Braves.
And that trend of striking out a ton has a great chance to continue tonight when they dig in tonight against Nathan Eovaldi and the Boston Red Sox.
Eovaldi has been solid, if unspectacular, for the BoSox this season, pitching to a 4.25 expected ERA with a solid 26% strikeout rate. His stuff has been quite good over the last three starts where he has punched out 25 batters in 21 2-3 innings of work, going Over 6.5 strikeouts twice in that span, and the one time he didn’t he stuck out six.
Eovaldi also struck out 15 Angels in 10 2-3 innings over two starts against them last season, and this time around, their 9.16 strikeouts per game rank next-to-last in the MLB.
Until the Angels find a way to break out of this slump, fading them looks like a profitable proposition. And tonight, that’s by backing Eovaldi’s strikeout total.
Pick: Nathan Eovaldi Over 6.5 strikeouts (-112)
Bassitt Hound
The San Diego Padres are on a nice little run, winning four of their last five games, all coming against National League contenders in the Milwaukee Brewers and the New York Mets.
That stretch has allowed them to stay within striking distance of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the top spot in the NL West. But here’s something you may not know about the Padres if you don’t follow them every day. They really struggle against right-handed pitchers and they go up against a solid one in the Mets' Chris Bassitt tonight.
Yes, the Padres, somewhat shockingly, rank 25th in batting average (.228) and 28th in OPS (.644) vs. righties this season.
Bassitt hit a bit of a rough patch at the end of May but has been a solid acquisition for the Mets overall (even more so when you consider all their injuries in the rotation). Bassitt has a solid expected ERA of 3.69 while limiting opponents to a .235 expected batting average.
Bassitt has also given up five hits or fewer seven times in his 11 starts this season, and two of those games he didn’t were against a scrappy Giants team that has his number. Bassitt looks like a good bet to stay Under his hits allowed a total of 5.5 tonight in San Diego.
Pick: Chris Bassitt Under 5.5 hits allowed (-125)
