Today’s MLB props and picks
Trevor Rogers Over 4.5 hits allowed (+105 at DraftKings)
Marlins sophomore starter Trevor Rogers is having a strong season, pitching to a 2.71 ERA with a 1.17 WHIP through 23 starts, but oddsmakers might be a bit too bullish on his numbers today. Rogers and the Marlins are hosting the Washington Nationals who, despite throwing in the towel at the trade deadline, continue to produce at the plate.
The Nats are sixth in the majors with a .262 batting average over the last 30 days and they lead the majors with a BA of .278 against southpaws this season.
As good as Rogers has been, he has surrendered at least five hits in five of his last seven starts — which includes a pair of outings against the Nats where he allowed 12 hits in nine innings. Also, in one of those starts during this stretch where he allowed fewer than five hits, he was yanked out of the game after surrendering four early runs.
Take the Over 4.5 on his hits allowed.
Cincinnati -0.5 first 4.5 innings (+105 at bet365)
The Cincinnati Reds host the Pittsburgh Pirates in a battle between NL Central rivals. The Buccos will send Mitch Keller to the mound, who has been particularly brutal this season, pitching to a 6.14 ERA with a 1.74 WHIP in 20 starts. In three starts against the Reds, he has been even worse, surrendering 13 runs on 18 hits and eight walks across 13 1-3 innings.
Don't expect much run support for Keller either, with the Pirates ranking dead-last in scoring at 3.69 runs per game and sitting second-last in OPS at .670. Both of those numbers get even worse on the road, where they have an OPS of .649 and plate just 3.39 runs per game.
Tyler Mahle will toe the rubber for Cincy. The righty has been lights out versus the Pirates this season, limiting them to just three runs with an OBA of .224 through 18 1-3 innings across three starts — including six shutout innings against them last Thursday.
The Reds rank fourth in the majors with an OPS of .799 at home while plating an impressive 2.74 runs per game at home through the first four innings. Expect the home side to have the lead by the midway point of this contest.
Kyle Tucker Over 1.5 total bases (+100 at bet365)
The Astros have a loaded lineup and it seems at least one of their sluggers is always on fire. The man of the moment in Houston is outfielder Kyle Tucker, who is slashing .398/.438/.705 over the last 30 days with four homers, a pair of triples, and 11 doubles in 24 games.
Today, Tucker and the 'Stros are matched up against the Angels in Anaheim. The Halos will start rookie Packy Naughton, who has been shredded in two of his last three starts, surrendering 12 hits and seven earned runs in 6 1-3 innings against the Yankees and White Sox.
Behind the inexperienced Naughton, the Angels have one of the worst bullpens in the majors — their relievers rank 26th in WHIP (1.43) and 27th in OBA (.251). Back the Over on Tucker's total bases tonight.
