The Texas Rangers will look to build on a four-game winning streak as they head to American Family Field on Monday night to open a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers have been strong at home, and the MLB odds have made them favored over the Rangers in tonight’s matchup.

I’ll take a closer look at whether the Rangers can continue their recent — and long overdue — run of good form tonight in my Rangers vs. Brewers predictions and MLB picks for June 24.

My analysis
The Texas Rangers haven’t made much of a title defense yet this season, as they’ve spent most of the year just trying to get back to .500. With that said, Texas has won four in a row and is finally showing signs of life.

The problem for Texas has come from its lineup, which hasn’t been able to replicate the incredible success it had in 2023. Last year, the Rangers were third in the majors in scoring, averaging 5.44 runs per game. That total is down over a run to 4.27, just below the league average.

The Rangers have been able to make up for some of that with starting pitching. One of the clear bright spots has been today’s starter, Michael Lorenzen, who has pitched to a 3.00 ERA so far on the season.

Some of Lorenzen’s peripherals look a bit questionable, in particular his walk rate of 3.8 per nine innings, but he's remained remarkably consistent for Texas, allowing three runs or fewer in each of his last seven starts while going 6+ innings in all but one of those appearances. Much of that effort was wasted by the Rangers earlier in the year, but as the team comes around, Lorenzen has gone 2-0 with a 2.28 ERA in 23 2/3 innings over his last four starts.

The Texas lineup also has an opportunity to heat up a bit tonight. The Rangers are averaging 5.6 runs per game over their last five contests and will face off against Freddy Peralta, who has struggled for much of the 2024 campaign.

In four June starts, Peralta has pitched to a disappointing 5.49 ERA, with opposing hitters getting on base against him at a .356 clip. While Peralta still has the stuff to generate strikeouts, the rest of his peripherals are decidedly mediocre, including allowing 11 home runs and 29 walks in just 82 innings of work so far this season.

If we care at all about how these teams have played recently, Texas has looked better, as Milwaukee is coming off losing three of four against the Padres. This game is much closer than the oddsmakers are suggesting, particularly given the pitching matchup. With generous odds on the visitors, I’m taking the Rangers to win outright.

Rangers vs Brewers same-game parlay (SGP)

Rangers moneyline

Over 8

Josh Smith Over 0.5 hits

I like the Rangers to pull off the upset tonight, as I think they’ll find success against Peralta. That means I’m also taking the Over as a part of my SGP as I’m happy with the reasonable 8-run total — a number these teams should be able to reach given the pitching matchup.

I’m also taking Josh Smith to get at least one hit for the Rangers tonight. The left-handed batter has recorded at least one hit in each of his last five games and is hitting .303 on the year, yet there’s still good value on Smith to record a hit tonight.

Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
