Red Sox vs Angels Picks and Predictions: Boston Adds to L.A.'s Losing Ways

The Los Angeles Angels have lost 11 in a row and things won't get much easier against Rafael Devers and the Boston Red Sox. Devers has feasted on right-handed pitching, and we like him to guide Boston to go Over their team total of 4.5 tonight.

While the Los Angeles Angels have lost each of their last 11 games, the Boston Red Sox enter this series between the two of them after having won four in a row. The Red Sox have been re-energized in their hunt for a postseason spot, while the Angels need to get it together fast.

Will Los Angeles find a way to get on track against a surging Boston team? Let's dig deeper with our MLB picks and predictions.

Red Sox vs Angels betting preview

Starting pitchers

Michael Wacha (3-1, 2.43 ERA): It’s been a while since Wacha was a consistent producer in the big leagues, but he's having a resurgence in Beantown. The 30-year-old has allowed two or fewer earned runs in seven of his eight appearances this season. At some point, he’s probably due for some regression to the mean, but the Red Sox have to be happy about where things are now.

Noah Syndergaard (4-3, 4.02 ERA): Syndergaard is coming off of a start against the New York Yankees in which he gave up five earned runs in 2 1-3 innings of work. The righty had been as advertised as a big free-agent signing for the Angels heading into that one though. The 29-year-old has absurd stuff, and he has given Los Angeles a front-end rotation piece it had been missing in recent seasons.

Red Sox vs Angels picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

It’s a little crazy to be seeing the Red Sox as underdogs in a game vs. a team that hasn’t won in two weeks, but here we are. This Boston lineup is really hot at the moment, and the group has hit very well against right-handed pitching. This year, the Red Sox are ninth in on-base plus slugging and third in weighted runs created when facing righties. Only four teams in baseball have scored more runs than Boston. With that in mind, the Red Sox should be able to score a few runs against Syndergaard.

Specifically, Rafael Devers is worth targeting, as the slugger is batting .331 with 10 homers and 25 RBI against right-handed pitching this season. But he's hardly the only Red Sox batter finding success in this kind of matchup. Veteran superstar J.D. Martinez is batting .336 with five homers, 14 doubles, and 20 RBI against righties. He has been more productive against southpaws, but the 34-year-old is a nightmare for any opposing pitcher, generally defying traditional splits. These two should spearhead a high-scoring Red Sox effort here.

Wacha, meanwhile, is not going to go out and throw a complete-game shutout, but he’s fully capable of limiting the Angels' damage over five or so frames. That’s what Boston has asked of Wacha all season, and the righty has clearly found something that is working for him to this point.

The difference in this game could ultimately come down to the bullpens, where the Angels have a 4.37 ERA as a unit and are coming off a total implosion against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday. The Red Sox are far from elite in that regard, but they’re down at 3.89 in 2022.

Prediction: Red Sox moneyline (+105 at Unibet

Over/Under analysis

Almost every sportsbook has this number sitting up at 9.0 at this point, so you’ll want to be looking at your options to try and grab it at 8.5. Either way, you should be good no matter what you end up taking here. Wacha isn’t likely to throw five or six shutout innings in this one. In fact, Boston is probably hoping beyond belief that he can give the team a quality start because the bullpen has been shaky at times.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox have the type of lineup that can give Syndergaard heaps of trouble. If these teams combine to score six or so runs in the first five or six innings, the Over should ultimately hit because neither squad has a very good bullpen.

The Over is 18-5-4 in Boston’s last 27 games against AL West opponents and is 8-3 in Boston's last 11 contests in which its opponent scored five or more in the team’s previous game.

All in all, you should expect this to be a high-scoring affair.

Prediction: Over 8.5 (-125 at WynnBET)

Best bet

Considering we like the Red Sox to win in what should be a high-scoring game, we love the plus-money odds that Boston is getting to score at least five runs tonight. Not only have the Red Sox scored at least five runs in each of their last four games, but they have also done so in eight of their last 11 overall. This is an offense that is really on fire at the moment, and Boston has multiple hitters who are seeing the ball well.

Syndergaard could also be somewhat low on confidence after getting lit up by the Yankees in his last start. Also, taking the Over on Boston's team total protects you in case the Red Sox end up losing a really high-scoring game, or if Wacha holds Los Angeles in check.

Pick: Red Sox Team Total Over 4.5 (+108 at Unibet)
