Nathan Eovaldi didn't have a promising Spring Training, and the Red Sox aren't about to make easy for him on Opening Day.

A pair of American League pennant contenders will hit Globe Life Field, with the Boston Red Sox visiting the Texas Rangers for an Opening Day bout Thursday, March 27.

My Rex Sox vs. Rangers predictions and MLB picks are headlined by Texas righty Nathan Eovaldi, who makes his second consecutive Opening Day start this afternoon.

Red Sox vs Rangers prediction

My Red Sox vs Rangers best bet: Nathan Eovaldi Under 5.5 strikeouts (+112 at Pinnacle)

My analysis
Texas Rangers starter Nathan Eovaldi topped out at four innings in each of his final two spring-training starts, and he only threw 27 pitches across the four frames in his final tuneup against the Los Angeles Angels on Friday.

Eovaldi maxed out at 75 pitches across four innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks the start prior Sunday, March 9, but he was also roughed up for five hits, two walks, and four earned runs. He finished the spring with nine strikeouts across 13 innings for a pedestrian 6.23 K/9 and 16.4% K-rate.

The strikeout numbers are well below his established 8.52 K/9 and 23.4% K-rate through his first two seasons with the Rangers, and the Boston Red Sox fanned the sixth-most against right-handed pitchers last year.

Still, tossing just 27 pitches since March 9 gives me pause about how deep he’ll pitch into Thursday’s opener. The Boston lineup packs punch, and Eovaldi pitched to contact in that final spring start with just a single strikeout and walk across the four frames.

Red Sox vs Rangers same-game parlay (SGP)

Nathan Eovaldi Under 5.5 strikeouts

Rafael Devers Over 1.5 hits+runs+RBI

Jarren Duran Over 1.5 hits+runs+RBI

Boston youngsters Rafael Devers and Jarren Duran mashed against righties last season, and as noted, Eovaldi isn’t coming off the tidiest spring with his 5.54 ERA matching his 5.54 xFIP.

Duran posted a .384 wOBA and .352 on-base percentage against right-handed pitches last season, and he projects to open the year in the leadoff spot. Devers was even better with a .404 wOBA and .385 OBP, and he’ll likely hit second.
