Yankees vs Angels Prediction, Picks, and Odds for Tonight’s MLB Game

After a day off for both, the New York Yankees will continue their road trip and face the Los Angeles Angels for a three-game series. 

It’s been a rough stretch for Los Angeles, and my Yankees vs. Angels prediction expects Juan Soto to make it even worse. Find out why I'm taking the Over on his total bases prop in my MLB picks for this May 28 tilt.

My analysis
A topic that has come up this week amongst the local New York media is how sustainable the early season success of Juan Soto is. It makes sense: he’s the MVP front-runner and hitting career-best numbers in hard-hit rate, expected batting average, and average exit velocity.

Sustainable or not is a worthy conversation, but Soto is getting more opportunities to make plays with his offense because of the overall talent of his team. Thus, calculating the “sustainability” of what he’s doing is a tough feat.

What we know right now is Soto is playing some of the best baseball of his career, and it offers us great value tonight. That is when he’ll see a great matchup against a pitcher in Griffin Canning, who struggles against power hitters. 

Soto has a whooping zero career plate appearances against Canning, but the metrics are encouraging. As we mentioned before, Canning has issues with the hard-hit ball. How big of an issue? Canning has a hard-hit rate, barrel rate, and average exit velocity, all in the Bottom 30% of baseball amongst starting pitchers.

The exit velocity metric stands out the most as it sits in the Bottom 10% of baseball, and quite literally, no player in baseball has a higher exit velocity than Soto right now.

The scenario here isn’t hard to envision. As long as Soto is able to see competitive pitches, I like his chances to smack a few hard ones to get Over this base total. I projected this number at -128 and would play it to -120.

The analysis follows the same line of thinking of my best bet. Soto is certainly not the only Yankee with power, as New York is one of two teams that rank in the Top 5 of barrel rate, hard-hit rate, and average exit velocity.

It’ll use that to its advantage tonight against Canning and get at least three runs off of him to cash this one.
