The New York Yankees played spoiler against the Toronto Blue Jays with a 2-0 win in the series opener on Tuesday and will look to do the same tonight when ace Gerrit Cole takes the mound in a near-MLB odds-pick ‘em at Rogers Centre.

Cole hasn’t suffered a loss against Toronto in three meetings this season while allowing just one run in those contests. Will Cole and the Yankees spoil the Blue Jays’ hunt for a playoff spot again? Find out in our Yankees vs. Blue Jays MLB picks and predictions for Wednesday, September 27.

Yankees vs Blue Jays predictions

The Yankees and Blue Jays played to an uncharacteristically low-scoring contest in the opener, with neither club able to get on the board until the top of the ninth inning when Austin Wells hit a two-run bomb to help New York steal the win. Both starters — Michael King and Kevin Gausman — were outstanding for their respective clubs, allowing just four combined hits in the ballgame.

With Gerrit Cole and Jose Berrios taking the mound tonight, chances are we’ll see another strong showing from the pitchers, especially on the Yankees side.

Cole, the frontrunner in the AL Cy Young odds, has really turned it on this month, posting a 1.38 ERA over his last four starts. His last outing came against Toronto in last week’s series when he allowed just two hits and one earned run over eight innings while striking out nine. The right-hander hasn’t surrendered more than two earned runs in any of his last six appearances and has pitched well against the Jays this season, holding them to one earned run over 19.2 total innings.

Berrios will try to keep up for Toronto, though he’ll have to rebound from a tough outing last time out. Berrios went head-to-head against Cole last Thursday, allowing seven hits and four earned runs over 5.2 innings in the loss. The right-hander has been solid outside of that start, holding opponents to two earned runs or fewer in three of his last four games, and will have to deliver again to keep the Jays in the ballgame.

Regardless of who comes out on top, I think we’ll see the clubs combine for Under 7 runs tonight.

My best bet: Under 7 (+103 at Pinnacle)

Yankees vs Blue Jays same-game parlay

Under 7.5 (-135)
Wells 2+ total bases (+160)
Springer 2+ total bases (+115)

For tonight’s same-game parlay, we’ll take the Under on 7.5 runs and look for a couple of multi-base performances out of some hot hitters.

Wells played the hero for New York last night with his two-run homer in the ninth, but the catcher has been heating up for a while now. Wells has three hits, nine bases, two home runs, and four RBI over his last two contests and has posted multiple bases in five of his last eight outings.

We’ll also look for George Springer to get back on track with at least two bases tonight. The Blue Jays right fielder went 0-for-3 on Tuesday, snapping a seven-game hit streak where he posted multiple bases in five of those contests. Springer had two-plus bases in two of three games against the Yankees last week, so we’ll see if he can pull it off again tonight.

Yankees vs Blue Jays moneyline and Over/Under analysis

Both clubs opened at identical -104 odds for this one, with Toronto eventually emerging as the home favorite at around -125 and New York getting +100 at some books by Wednesday morning. This game means a lot for the Blue Jays’ playoff hopes, but I think Cole will sway this one in favor of the Yankees.

Cole has been a Blue Jays killer this season with his 0.46 ERA against Toronto standing as his best mark vs. any club he’s faced more than once. The right-hander is undefeated through his last six starts, going 4-0 over that span and allowing four hits or fewer in four of those games. Toronto’s batting just .181 against Cole this year so the Jays lineup could be in for a long, quiet night.

Tonight’s total opened at 7 runs and I think Cole is a big reason why the Under will cash in this one. While Cole’s dominance will likely keep the Jays’ score down, the Yankees’ offense has also been relatively quiet, averaging just 3.13 runs over their last seven games. New York has scored just nine runs total over its last four meetings against Toronto, so this is shaping up to be another low-scoring contest.

Starting pitchers

Gerrit Cole (14-4, 2.75 ERA): Cole has been nothing short of dominant this season, ranking second in ERA, third in innings pitched (200), first in WHIP (1.02), and fifth in opposing batting average (.212) among all eligible starters. The 33-year-old finished second in Cy Young voting in 2019 and 2021 but will look to change that with a strong finish to this season.

Jose Berrios (11-11, 3.58 ERA): The Blue Jays’ chances tonight likely rest on the shoulders of Berrios, who will need to pitch a gem to keep up with Cole. Unfortunately for Toronto, Berrios has not pitched well against New York this season, posting a 5.11 ERA over two starts while allowing at least three earned runs in both of those outings.
