Yankees vs Red Sox betting preview

Starting pitchers

Jordan Montgomery (3-2, 3.19 ERA): The southpaw has pitched to a career-best 3.19 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, and .226 OBA in 16 starts this season. In his last outing, he fanned eight batters and allowed just three hits in five innings of one-run ball against the Guardians.

Kutter Crawford (2-2, 5.04 ERA): The 26-year-old has bounced between Boston and Triple-A Worcester this season. He has made three starts in the majors since the beginning of June, looking terrific in two of them and struggling in the other. In his previous start, he limited the Rays to just two hits and zero runs in 5 1-3 innings of work.

Yankees vs Red Sox picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

The New York Yankees don't just enter this contest with the best record in the majors, they're on pace to break the MLB record with 117 wins. They lead the majors with an OPS of .770 and have bumped that number up to .800 over the last 15 days.

Boston has been quite as dangerous at the plate as the Yankees, ranking seventh in the majors with an OPS of .739. While stars like Rafael Devers, Xander Bogaerts, and J.D. Martinez have been raking the rest of the lineup hasn't been contributing enough and Devers will sit out today's game with a back injury.

New York should also have the edge on the mound tonight with Jordan Montgomery getting the start. The lefty has a 3.19 ERA and has done a good job of attacking the strike zone and inducing soft contact.

The Red Sox will respond with rookie Kutter Crawford, who is coming off a terrific start but there's a reason he entered the year as Boston's No. 24 ranked prospect and had a 5.18 ERA in 24 1-3 innings in Triple-A. Now he'll be facing off against the majors best hitting team and a lineup loaded with sluggers that will drive the ball down his throat.

Back the Yankees on the moneyline.

PredictionYankees ML (-160 at bet365)

Over/Under analysis

The Yankees lead the majors with 5.23 runs per game and have been even better on the road where they average 5.56. They also lead the majors in Barrel Percentage which should mean good contact against Crawford who ranks among the bottom 10th percentile of pitchers in Barrel rate.

The Red Sox aren't quite on New York's level when it comes to generating runs but they are still sixth in the majors with 4.68 runs per game.

They also do an excellent job of hitting against southpaws like Montgomery, boasting an OPS of .788 against southpaws. I'm taking the Over 9.0 here.

Prediction: Over 9 (-115 at Betway)

Best bet

Boston caught on fire in June, winning 19 of its first 23 games, but has since cooled down. It is just 3-8 in its last 11 contests and has dropped four in a row entering today.

That strong start in June might have been fool's gold for their stock with the Red Sox benefitting from a relatively easy schedule during that span including six games against the A's.

The lines so far in this series have been a bit too close when you consider how good the Yanks have been all season and the pitching matchups we've seen so far — Gerrit Cole and Nestor Cortes in the first two games and now Montgomery. I'll gladly take New York at this price.
