The Indiana Pacers return to Gainbridge Fieldhouse this afternoon for their home opener with the Philadelphia 76ers.

76ers guard Tyrese Maxey has had a slow start to his season, and my 76ers vs. Pacers predictions expect his struggles to continue today.

Read on as I explain my NBA picks for the 76ers vs. Pacers on Sunday, October 27.

76ers vs Pacers prediction

My best bet
Tyrese Maxey Under 40.5 points + rebounds + assists (-115 at bet365)

My analysis
Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey is riding the struggle bus. The fifth-year guard out of Kentucky is having a tough time carrying the 76ers without Joel Embiid and preseason acquisition Paul George in the lineup.

The 76ers guard is coming off a career year in points, rebounds, and assists, but the start of this season has been unkind. He gets his buckets (24.5 ppg), but he’s draining only 29.6% of his shots from the field and just 19% from downtown.

Maxey still gets to the charity stripe (8.0 attempts per game), but that’s been the only bright spot thus far. His assists and rebounds are down, making this line of 40.5 too high for my taste.

He's clearly struggling with his shot. The Indiana Pacers don’t play great defense, but Gainbridge Fieldhouse is no place for a visiting shooter riding the struggle bus.

He’ll be lucky to score 25 points today. Maxey’s assist numbers are down because he isn’t the only 76ers shooter shooting bricks. Philadelphia is 28th in effective field goal percentage (45%) and 25th in true shooting percentage (52%).

Indiana will likely double-team Maxey at every corner, and that will only make it tougher for him to reach this number.

76ers vs Pacers same-game parlay (SGP)

Tyrese Maxey Under 40.5 points + rebounds + assists

Tyrese Maxey Under 3.5 threes

Pacers -7.5

It's hard to imagine Philly covering if Maxey continues to struggle like I expect him to.

The Pacers are playing their home opener in a barn where they went 28-19-2 ATS last season. They meet a 76ers side that’s struggling without Embiid on the floor. The defensive impact they expected from George hasn’t been felt yet because he’s missed their first two games.

Indiana does not have to deal with Philly's main scoring threats, which will allow more of their attention to be spent on Maxey. Milwaukee and Toronto beat and covered against the 76ers by focusing on Maxey. I expect the Pacers to deploy the same strategy and get the same result.

  • The 76ers are 0-2 ATS without Embiid and George. That’s why the Pacers are sizable favorites in this game.
