Anthony Davis’ return gives the Dallas Mavericks a real shot at a play-in spot, and they’ll take any good news they can get heading into tonight’s clash with the Orlando Magic.
Orlando has won three in a row to close in on the No. 7 seed in the East, but my Mavericks vs Magic predictions anticipate Dallas putting up a fight here, led by a key backcourt veteran.
My NBA picks and betting angles take a closer look at this matchup on Thursday, March 27.
Mavericks vs Magic prediction
My best bet: Spencer Dinwiddie Over 19.5 points + assists (-110 at bet365)
My analysis
Spencer Dinwiddie didn’t exactly sign up for this when he joined the Dallas Mavericks last summer. The plan was for Dinwiddie to serve as a backup for Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, but the earth-shattering developments in Dallas mean he’s now running the show.
Dinwiddie is giving it his best shot, and I’m taking the Over on his points + assists combo prop tonight against the Orlando Magic. While the Mavs have capable scorers in Anthony Davis and Klay Thompson, none of them can initiate the offense like Dinwiddie, who should continue as the primary ballhandler.
He’s dished 45 dimes across his past five games, and Davis gives him a perfect finisher to target in the paint. However, it’s Dinwiddie’s scoring that makes this prop line feel too low. He’s averaging almost 20 PPG in his last eight contests, dropping at least 18 points in five of those outings — and again, Davis’ presence clears the way for other Mavs to thrive.
Dinwiddie has gone past this 19.5 O/U line in six straight games, and he’s capable of creating his own shot — which will be critical against Orlando’s smothering defense. His 3-point stroke comes and goes, but volume shouldn’t be an issue on a Dallas team that’s short on scoring options without Irving and P.J. Washington.
With Davis likely to remain on a minutes limit, Dinwiddie can settle in for a big workload again. He’s logged 35+ minutes in seven of his last eight contests, and that paves the way for a stat-stuffing performance tonight.
Mavericks vs Magic same-game parlay
Anthony Black is playing his way into a bigger role for the Magic, and he could hit the 30-minute mark for the third straight game here. Black is emerging as the likeliest No. 3 scorer for Orlando, but it’s his work on the glass that I’m targeting for my SGP.
He’s finished with 4+ boards in five of his last six outings, and there will be rebounds up for grabs tonight as the Magic frontcourt focuses on containing Davis. With the play-in tournament just around the corner, watch for Black to soak up even more of the guard minutes for Jamahl Mosley’s team.
Though the Magic have won four of their last five games, I’m wary about laying this many points with the hosts when so much of the scoring load rests on the shoulders of Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner.
Orlando is 9-16-1 ATS against Western Conference opponents this season, and the hosts’ offense ranks dead last in the NBA with just 105.1 PPG. That makes Dallas a value pick with a 7-point spread, and the visitors are 3-1 ATS in their past four contests.
