Barrett breaks out
The New York Knicks have bet big on RJ Barrett. When they functionally took him off the table in the Donovan Mitchell trade negotiations by granting him a contract extension worth up to $120 million, they were gambling that RJ might turn into something they haven’t had in ages: a homegrown face of the franchise.
The early returns have been mixed after RJ started the regular season in a hellacious shooting slump. But after a feeling-out period where Barrett was learning to play alongside newcomers Jalen Brunson and Isaiah Hartenstein he’s started to come into his own.

Barrett has taken big leaps in the past eight games as a scorer by improving as a finisher, getting to the line more, and taking better shots. He’s shooting a career-high percentage at the rim, from floater range, and from the free throw line. He’s eliminated his long midrange twos completely and is focusing on taking catch-and-shoot threes — hitting those at a 39% clip.
He’s beginning to look every bit the part of a star wing scorer, the most valuable archetype in contemporary NBA basketball.
In part, this is down to RJ’s own relentless desire to improve. But he’s also benefiting greatly from the play of Brunson, who is gifting him more possessions to attack with the opposing defense already bent than at any point in his career.
RJ’s signature remains his desire to drive and attack the basket, much like his Canadian foe in Sunday’s game, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. But unlike the Knicks — who have a pretty stout interior defense — the Thunder allow the second most shots at the rim of any team in the NBA. The lane should be open for Barrett to attack early and often.
RJ Barrett Prop: Over 21.5 points (-108)
Headband Huerter
The Sacramento Kings are fun. They’re getting big contributions from De'Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis, but it’s also been their more marginal moves that have paid early dividends. Perhaps none more so than the trade that brought the “Red Mamba”, Kevin Huerter, into the fold.
It’s no coincidence that Trae Young is off to the least efficient season of his career just as it isn’t that Fox is thriving so far. Kevin Huerter’s size and shooting are a massive boon to whichever primary ballhandler he finds himself partnered with.
He provides a level of gravity that forces opposing defenses to spread themselves thin on defense, and you can’t get away with putting a weak isolation defender on him either. Recall that it wasn’t so long ago that Huerter played Seth Curry off the court in the playoffs.

Huerter appears to have taken a leap too. His 7.5 3-point attempts per game blow away his previous career high, and to this point, he’s hitting them at a 50% clip. He should be able to poke holes into what is suddenly an already porous Golden State Warriors’ defense.
Golden State’s defense has slipped all the way to a Bottom 10 ranking with its recent struggles. It's still one of the best teams at preventing shots at the rim, but like many teams with that focus, it allows a lot of threes in exchange.
52% of Huerter’s shots are above the break threes, 97th percentile among all wings. While the Warriors do an okay job limiting corner threes, that particular shot is one they frequently concede. With the Dubs limited wing defense right now, Huerter is a great bet to hit this Over.
Kevin Huerter Prop: Over 2.5 threes made (-118)
Westbrook's rebound
Few professional athletes get to write their own ending. Most, even the best of the best, go out a shadow of their former selves, as their body gradually betrays them. Some players' very nature seems to accelerate the process. The fire, brashness, or stubbornness that made them great at the peak of their powers now works against them.
Russell Westbrook, an unquestioned Hall of Famer, former MVP, and the guy who devalued the formerly distinguished triple-double because he made the act of getting them to seem pedestrian has for a few years looked like one of these players. He’s floundered as a Los Angeles Laker, a poor fit next to LeBron and Anthony Davis, and has endured a cacophony of criticism in the process.

But things have turned around some lately. Coach Darvin Ham made the long-called-for decision of moving Westbrook to the bench, and he’s thrived in this newfound Sixth Man role.
One of Westbrook's greatest strengths remains his rebounding. Though some have criticized him for padding stats, or in the past given all the credit to the box-out work of Steven Adams, Westbrook has been statistically one of the best rebounders on both ends for over a decade now — including as a Laker.
Even though Russ will be coming off the bench, with LeBron likely out, Westbrook will play starters minutes against the Nets Sunday night. And you know that with his old teammate Kevin Durant leading the charge for the Brooklyn Nets, Westbrook is going to take this game personally.
The Nets have improved on defense in recent games, but they remain abysmal on the glass. They’re the league’s worst defensive rebounding team and the fifth worst on the offensive boards. Even at this stage in his career, Westbrook should have no problem with this modest number.
Russell Westbrook Prop: Over 5.5 rebounds (+123)
