All eyes will be on Victor Wembanyama tonight as the French phenom makes the most anticipated NBA debut since LeBron James — and you can be sure the NBA odds market will be feeding off that energy and media frenzy.

As Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs welcome the Dallas Mavericks to Frost Bank Center, the Wemby hype train is off the rails on the heels of some magic moments in preseason action.

Every time he steps on the court, the Rookie of the Year favorite will make for appointment viewing, and his name is going to keep coming up as one of the must-have NBA player props.

I’m taking a closer look at the Victor Wembanyama odds for his first regular season contest to bring you my favorite NBA picks involving the highly-touted rookie!

Victor Wembanyama NBA prop pick

Over 17.5 points (-115)

The San Antonio Spurs’ good lottery luck over the years has been well documented, from David Robinson to Tim Duncan and now a third generational talent in Wembanyama.

I expect the No. 1 pick to embrace that spotlight and make a big-time first impression. There are plenty of Wemby props to get excited about tonight for a player who impacts the game so dramatically at both ends of the floor, but his points prop is the one that stands out to me.

Wembanyama averaged 19 points across four preseason games, with a high of 23 points against the Miami Heat. He shot over 60% in two of those outings and made more than one triple in three of them.

This season opener will be the first chance to gauge how many minutes Gregg Popovich is going to give Wemby as he adjusts to life in the NBA. But there’s every reason to expect an uptick from his preseason workload (roughly 20 minutes per game).

Better still, Wembanyama is facing a Dallas Mavericks defense here that’s not exactly stellar on the defensive end. Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic (questionable) aren’t likely to offer much resistance on the perimeter, while Wemby will find mismatches against an undersized Dallas frontcourt.

The visitors allowed opponents to shoot 48.5% from the field last season (seventh-worst mark in the league) and gave up a middle-of-the-pack 114.1 points per game. Their 15-26 road record just adds to the sense that the Spurs could have an edge despite being a home underdog tonight.

With the green light firmly on to fire up shots, the stage is set for Wembanyama to dominate and I’m grabbing the Over on his points prop.

Continuing the Wemby theme, I see the Mavericks having a fruitless night in the paint with the Frenchman and his eight-foot wingspan patrolling around the rim. Wembanyama had five blocks in 21 minutes in the preseason finale against the Golden State Warriors, and even dynamic drivers like Irving and Doncic will have to think twice tonight.

With Dallas’ rotation likely to lean towards a number of players 6-foot-7 or shorter, I like the Over on Wemby’s blocks in this Texas showdown. It may take a few weeks before the rest of the league adjusts to the rookie’s unique ability to affect shots.

Wembanyama isn’t the only San Antonio starter poised for a huge season either. Devin Vassell signed a five-year, $135M contract extension earlier this month, and he’s set to benefit in a big way now that the Spurs have Wemby as their offensive focal point.

Vassell averaged 18.5 points last season and shot 39% from deep, but he only appeared in 38 games. If he can stay healthy, the 23-year-old has a path to even better numbers this year with more room to operate.

I’m bumping up the SGP odds with the Over on Vassell’s points prop, with San Antonio capable of exploiting the Mavericks’ lack of defensive stoppers in this home opener.
