Alabama vs Vanderbilt picks and predictions

Our predictions are compiled from the analysis of the spread and total and are indications of where we are leaning for this game.
Our best bet is the play that we like the most for this game, which we would actually put some of our bankroll behind.

Spread analysis

Alabama is one of the best offensive teams in all of college basketball, as the Crimson Tide are 11th in the nation adjusted offensive efficiency (all efficiency stats from KenPom.com) and play at the 17th-fastest pace in the nation. It’s a fitting style of play for an Alabama backcourt that features four really good guards.

Jaden Shackelford leads the team in scoring at 17.1 points per game, but Alabama can also count on consistent production from guys like Jahvon Quinerly, Keon Ellis and JD Davison. A lot of those players are comfortable handling the ball, which allows the Tide to get up and down the floor in a hurry.

Vanderbilt does, however, have a pretty good chance of keeping this Alabama offense in check. The Commodores have been surprisingly good on the defensive end this season, as they are 45th in the nation in adjusted defensive efficiency.

Vanderbilt has held five of its last six opponents to under 45.0% shooting from the floor, and the Commodores are very persistent in trying to run shooters off of the 3-point line. They contest everything from deep and they also tend to do a decent job around the basket, too. That should help them a lot against this Crimson Tide offense, which could also be a bit rattled in what is sure to be a great atmosphere at Memorial Gymnasium.

Offensively, the Commodores don’t possess the same talent as their opponents in this one, but Vanderbilt should still be able to turn in a solid performance here.

Scotty Pippen Jr. has turned into a real NBA prospect this year, as he’s averaging 19.5 points, 3.8 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game for the Commodores. He should be able to make an impact on this game, and he should get some help from Jordan Wright and Myles Stute.

Wright has a solid all-around game, while Stute will be extremely important as a floor spacer here. With Rodney Chatman out, Vanderbilt will be relying heavily on Stute to hit some outside shots.

Overall, this game should end up going down to the wire and this seems like too many points for the Commodores to be getting. Don’t be surprised if Vanderbilt ends up winning this game outright.

Prediction: Vanderbilt +4.5 (-110)

Over/Under analysis

The total in this game is a bit higher than you’d want it to be, but there are some sites hanging better numbers out there than others and backing the Over is just a smart move with Alabama right now. While Vanderbilt will be counting on its defense to stay in this game, there should still be a decent number of points scored. Alabama has gone Over the total in three of its last four coming into this contest, while Vanderbilt has gone Over in each of its last seven games. These teams also happened to combine to score 160 points when they met last February.

The Over is 10-1 in Alabama’s last 11 road games against teams with winning records, and it’s 4-1 in the last five games that the Crimson Tide have played as road favorites. Meanwhile, the Over is also 5-0 in Vanderbilt’s last five games against teams with winning percentages above 60.0%. When you put together the style of play and the trends, it’s just hard to see this one going Under.

Prediction: Over 153 (-110)

Best bet

Since Nate Oats became the head coach of Alabama, the Crimson Tide are 9-19 against the spread when coming off a game in which they gave up 80 or more points. His team’s underperforming defense is one of the main reasons you can trust Vanderbilt in this game, as the Commodores should be able to put up a decent number of points. Meanwhile, Vanderbilt is the more likely team to come away with timely stops in this game.

Also, the Commodores have covered in each of their last six games and have won four in a row when playing at home. On top of that, the Commodores are facing a Crimson Tide team that is just 2-11 ATS  when facing conference opponents this season. Alabama is also just 6-14 against the spread as a favorite this year.

Pick: Vanderbilt +4.5 (-110)
