Auburn vs Tennessee Picks and Predictions: Tigers Not Migrating Well

The Tigers are vying for an SEC title, but they haven't been the same squad on the road of late. That's big against a Volunteers squad that's dominant at home, and helps dictate our Auburn vs. Tennessee picks.

The Auburn Tigers will head out to Knoxville, Tennessee, to take on the Tennessee Volunteers in what should be a fantastic SEC battle.

Auburn is 25-3 on the season but still hasn’t won the SEC regular-season title, with Kentucky, Arkansas, and Tennessee still also in the race. The Volunteers have been tremendous as of late, winning six of their last seven games. The lone loss came against Arkansas, but Tennessee was able to defeat Kentucky during that stretch.

Can Tennessee keep its SEC regular-season hopes alive? Here are our college basketball picks and predictions for Auburn vs. Tennessee.

Spread analysis

Home court advantage really matters in high major play. The Tennessee Volunteers are currently 14-0 at home and are multiple possession favorites against one of the best teams in the country.

To me, it makes sense.

The Tennessee Volunteers aren’t going to play the best offense, but the defense will be there. Tennessee is holding opponents to a 47.2% effective field goal percentage while earning 24% turnovers.

The Volunteers are allowing teams to shoot just 32.4% from deep and 46.3% from inside the arc. Tennessee is also earning 13.8% of blocks and 13.9% of steals per game this season. It’s really hard to score against this Volunteers team.

Meanwhile, Auburn has been able to limit turnovers to 16.7% and grab 34.1% rebounds. The Tigers are shooting 32.1% from three and 53.1% from inside the arc. Auburn will take a solid amount of threes and that’s one area where Tennessee has been good at defending. The Volunteers are also holding opponents to just 27.1% of offensive rebounds.

On the flip side, Auburn’s defense is just as good. The Tigers hold opponents to a 44.2% effective field goal percentage with teams shooting just 31.2% from three and just 42.7% from inside the arc.

The Tigers will foul and aren’t as good on the defensive glass as Tennessee. However, the Volunteers get to the line at a lower rate, to begin with. Turnovers from Tennessee should also be limited, and with the Volunteers shooting a high amount of threes, Tennessee should be able to pull ahead in this game.

Give me the home team against the spread.

Prediction: Tennessee -3.5 (-110)

Over/Under analysis

The Volunteers and Tigers are both currently in the Top 10 in defensive adjusted efficiency via KenPom.

I’d much rather rely on both of these defenses over their offenses. Auburn has struggled from 3-point range this season, while Tennessee should have trouble trying to score inside at a consistent pace.

I’ll grab the Under.

Prediction: Under 139.5 (-110)

Best bet

I’m sticking with Tennessee against the spread. The Volunteers are dominating at home and Auburn just doesn’t look like the same team on the road this season.

Auburn lost to Florida on the road last week, lost to Arkansas in overtime on the road the week before and almost lost to Georgia, 74-72, on the road before that Arkansas game.

I’m way more confident taking Tennessee.

Pick: Tennessee -3.5 (-110)
