Spread analysis
Maryland should be in for another good year under head coach Mark Turgeon, but the team shouldn’t be expecting an easy win over George Mason tonight. The Patriots are now coached by former NBA player Kim English, who was a tremendous college player at the University of Missouri. English, who was mostly a sniper from the outside, has his team playing some solid offense, and it should come as no surprise that the Patriots are shooting the three-ball well.
George Mason went 12 for 26 from deep in an 87-66 victory over the Pennsylvania Quakers two games ago, and the Patriots followed that performance up by going 15 for 33 from three in a 90-53 win over the Morgan State Bears. Maryland is 23rd in the league in adjusted defensive rating (according to KenPom.com), so George Mason won’t get a ton of open looks in this one. However, the Patriots should bury just enough to ultimately put a scare in the Terrapins.
Josh Oduro, who is averaging 19.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game for George Mason, could be a huge factor in this game, but don’t sleep on University of Colorado transfer D’Shawn Schwartz, who is averaging 15.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game through three games. He’s a lights-out shooter with big-game experience.
Maryland has plenty of firepower of its own, as University of Rhode Island transfer Fatts Russell is a stud in the backcourt, while returners like Eric Ayala and Donta Scott are both great players. Georgetown transfer Qudus Wahab is a load in the paint, and he could ultimately be the reason the Terps win this game as the Patriots just don’t have anyone with his pure physical talent. However, the difference between these teams isn’t as big as you would think, and George Mason should be able to keep this loss to single digits.
Prediction: George Mason +11.5 (-110)
Over/Under analysis
George Mason is averaging 83.7 points per game this season and Maryland is averaging 74.0 points per game. This will be the toughest competition that either team has faced this year, so they won’t automatically reach those numbers again in this one. However, it’s just important to note that both of these teams have shown that they can score the basketball, so it wouldn’t be all that shocking if both teams finish this game in the 70s.
Over the last three seasons, the Over is 14-2 when George Mason has played on the road against teams with winning records. It’s also 6-0 when the Patriots have played as road underdogs since the start of last season. On top of that, the Over hit when these two teams met back in 2019.
Prediction: Over 137.0 (-120)
Best bet
The Patriots are 10.5-point underdogs on all but one sportsbook, so this is yet another example of why it’s smart to shop around. DraftKings is still floating this number at 11.5, so it’s a no-brainer to play this game there.
George Mason might not ultimately be an NCAA Tournament team or anything, but this team is much better than it was a year ago. The Patriots have legitimate talent all throughout their rotation and they won’t backdown in this meeting with the Terrapins. Having a young, former pro as a head coach will only make this group play harder in spots like this one.
It’s also worth noting that Maryland is just 9-23 against the spread in November games under Turgeon. The team is also just 26-39 against the spread when favored by 10 or more at home under Turgeon.
