Georgetown vs Providence Odds, Picks and Predictions: Friars Put Clamps On Epps

Jayden Epps has been hit-or-miss for Georgetown, with most of said misses coming against top defenses. With Providence being a stout resistance, our college basketball picks are eyeing a rough outing for Epps.

The Big East schedule has been brutal for the Georgetown Hoyas.

Suffering four straight losses and seven of eight to open the conference slate, they’ll try to stop the bleeding when they visit the Providence Friars Saturday afternoon.

The Friars stopped their own four-game Big East slide with a pair of wins to even their conference mark at 4-4. They’re hefty 11.5-point favorites against the Hoyas in the college basketball odds.

Georgetown vs Providence picks and predictions

After three competitive losses to Seton Hall, UConn (then ranked fourth), and a nail-biting 92-91 loss to Xavier, the wheels completely fell off last game, as Georgetown was demolished 90-66 by the Butler Bulldogs.

Georgetown shot just 34.8% from the field, including a rough 9-for-34 mark from 3-point range, as they dropped to 1-7 in Big East play. Only winless DePaul sits below them in the standings.

If there has been a bright spot, it’s been the play of sophomore guard Jayden Epps. The Illinois transfer currently leads the Big East in scoring, putting up 18.8 points per game.

Epps has led the Hoyas in scoring three of the last four games, though his 16-point outing against Butler had him shoot a season-worst 4-for-19 from the field, including a brutal 2-for-13 from distance, a miniscule 15.4% clip.

He does also have a pair of 30+ point outings, dropping 32 with 11 dimes against Xavier, and hitting 30 with five dimes in a 74-70 defeat to Seton Hall.

However, the Musketeers and the Pirates are in the bottom-half of Big East scoring defense, a far cry from Providence, who enter Saturday allowing just 65.6 points per game, which ranks second in the conference and 44th in the nation.

The Friars hold teams to 39.6% shooting, a Top-20 mark in college hoops, and they’re second-best in assists allowed, just 8.7 per contest.

And if you take Epps’ two standout performances out of the mix against similar subpar conference comp, he’s averaging just 10.6 points across the other six games.

I think he’s close to the 16.5 total, but a solid Providence defense holds him down.

My best bet: Jayden Epps Under 16.5 points (-105 at DraftKings)

Georgetown vs Providence same-game parlay

Jayden Epps Under 16.5 points

Devin Carter Over 1.5 3-pointers

Over 142.5 points

This game also features the second-leading scorer in the Big East — junior guard Devin Carter. He’s putting up 18 points per game on 47.9% shooting, which are both current career-highs.

Carter is also hitting the 3-ball at a 36.1% rate, the first time in three seasons he’s hit better than 30% from beyond the arc.

He’s coming off a 14-point, 6-rebound, 6-assist game in a 67-63 win over Seton Hall last time out, which included a 1-for-6 shooting performance from distance.

That broke a streak of 10 straight games where Carter had made at least two triples. Prior to the Seton Hall game, he had gone 30-for-75 from the land beyond, a nice, round 40% mark.

Georgetown has allowed at least one opponent to hit two 3-pointers in every Big East game this season, and Carter is the perfect candidate to extend that streak.

We can make this a three-legged SGP by targeting the total.

Providence has seen the Over hit in three of its last four, and should have no problem getting buckets against a Hoyas defense that ranks 10th of 11 Big East schools, surrendering 74.6 points per game.

Despite its struggles, Georgetown has hit the Over in each of its last four, as it’s averaged 73.5 points per game.

And though the Hoyas are just 1-4 on the road in conference play, those games have averaged a combined score of 151 points. I like the trend to continue Saturday at Amica Mutual Pavilion.

Georgetown vs Providence spread and Over/Under analysis

This line opened as low as 9.5 points, but there has been some movement. Depending on which site you choose, you can find action anywhere up to and including a high of Providence as 12.5-point favorites.

The Friars boast an 11-7-1 record against the spread this season, and have covered two of the last three head-to-head meetings. Georgetown is just 8-11-0 ATS on the year.

The lowest total line set for this matchup is 141 points, but there are different levels of juice, to a high of 143.5 points.

Georgetown has seen the Over go 10-8-1 in their games, while Providence is an Under team, with a sparkling record of 12-6-1.
