It’s going to be really hard for Maryland to pull off an upset win. The defense has struggled and allowed 110 points to Iowa in their last game. Now the Terrapins will take on another elite offense in Purdue, and things could be similar.
Purdue is currently the best offense in the nation, shooting an effective field goal percentage of 58.7% on the season. The Boilermakers will rarely turn the ball over, earn 36.3% offensive rebounds and shoot lights out from the field.
The Boilermakers hit 40.5% from deep and 57.2% from inside the arc. Meanwhile, Maryland is allowing opponents to shoot nearly 35% from downtown along with 47.9% from inside the arc.
The Terrapins won’t force a whole lot of turnovers, and while Maryland has been solid limiting offensive rebounds, the Terrapins will have a big test tonight.
The Terrapins are currently holding teams off the line consistently, which could help them cover in this game.
On the other hand, Purdue’s defense isn’t all that either. The Boilermakers are allowing teams to shoot 34.3% from deep and 48.6% from inside the arc. The only reason that the Boilermakers are a huge favorite is they can rebound at a high rate on the defensive glass, holding opponents to 23.5% offensive rebounds.
Maryland is only shooting a 48.7% effective field goal percentage but also doesn’t turn the ball over very often, at 17.6%. The Terrapins are also shooting 75.3% from the line. While Maryland gets to the line often, Purdue has also limited teams from getting there this season.
Despite Maryland playing so poorly recently, in a Big Ten game, no spread should ever be as high as 16 points. Maryland’s going to lose, but not by that much.

Both of these teams are in the Top 100 offensively, but ranked in the triple digits defensively via KenPom.
Purdue should be able to light up the scoreboard against Purdue, just like Iowa did. Meanwhile, Maryland will still hang around offensively on their end. After all, Purdue is allowing teams to shoot over 34% from 3-point range.

This is the Big Ten. Anything can happen in this league and every team is competitive enough to where they have a chance at the beginning of the game.
The Terrapins won’t turn the ball over and have been a better overall defensive team, especially inside the arc this season.
So, I’ll take my chances with Maryland. 16 points is just too big of a margin for us to fade here.
